okay, so my independent jeweler is coming to show me three stones tonight. One is GIA cert., the other two, EGL. She''s bringing the stats, etc. so I can post that later on.
I''m such a newbie. Help me with some hints about what I should look for when examining these stones. THey are BIG ones, all over two carats. Two ovals and an emerald cut.
I know i''ll have them independantly appraised if I decide to buy. Everyone who has worked w/ her that I know has been verrrry pleased with her; she has sources for custom jewelry, etc. I can take them outside, look at them inside, etc. How can I best detect the brilliance, etc. w/ my own naked eyes. Reading pricescope for the past two weeks has got me all wound up about getting the perfect stone - - especially since it''s mega bucks we''re talking about. I know the doubts about EGL, etc. but the general consensus seems to be: buy the stone and not the paper. If an independent appraiser concurs on the quality, then I will, esp. if it means a dollar savings. I just won''t buy an inferior stone to save money. This is a once in a lifetime thing for me. My husband is not usually so indulgent (although a great man, he''s much more frugal than I), so it''s imperative that this rock be the Right Rock. I''ve seen two nice ones from Good Old Gold, and a lovely one at a local B & M, (not a chain, just a nice neighborhood jeweler) so I think I''ll have some options.
On a side not, I went mall-perusing yesterday, just to see some options, and they basically have NOTHING to even look at. A one carat round or princess or smaller emerald cut was all to be had, though they are all eager to call in stones for me. Oh yes, I was warned about the dangers of online buying, and one "jeweler" (a kid) dismissed my query of other lab grading: "What about AGS?" "Never heard of it." "Really? Well, what about EGL?" "Never heard of it. Ours are rated by the best lab, IGI." IGI? The best? Hmmm.
One nice jeweler said the EGL could be fine if you examine the stone carefully, etc., generally concurred with its'' soft grading but said ''buy the stone and not the paper'' and this was the best jewelry store, the most quality, by far, of the lot of them.
It''s so odd how ignorant those sales people are.
Okay, so, please, any advice on viewing stones in my home?????? She is coming over in three hours! I am nervous. Is there any resource I can find that will give a "quality" range for things like depth, crown, pavilion, table, angles, etc. for oval or emerald stones, so I can make sense of the proportions when I see them or think about them later?
Am I making any sense?!
thanks.
