okay, so my independent jeweler is coming to show me three stones tonight. One is GIA cert., the other two, EGL. She''s bringing the stats, etc. so I can post that later on.

I''m such a newbie. Help me with some hints about what I should look for when examining these stones. THey are BIG ones, all over two carats. Two ovals and an emerald cut.

I know i''ll have them independantly appraised if I decide to buy. Everyone who has worked w/ her that I know has been verrrry pleased with her; she has sources for custom jewelry, etc. I can take them outside, look at them inside, etc. How can I best detect the brilliance, etc. w/ my own naked eyes. Reading pricescope for the past two weeks has got me all wound up about getting the perfect stone - - especially since it''s mega bucks we''re talking about. I know the doubts about EGL, etc. but the general consensus seems to be: buy the stone and not the paper. If an independent appraiser concurs on the quality, then I will, esp. if it means a dollar savings. I just won''t buy an inferior stone to save money. This is a once in a lifetime thing for me. My husband is not usually so indulgent (although a great man, he''s much more frugal than I), so it''s imperative that this rock be the Right Rock. I''ve seen two nice ones from Good Old Gold, and a lovely one at a local B & M, (not a chain, just a nice neighborhood jeweler) so I think I''ll have some options.

On a side not, I went mall-perusing yesterday, just to see some options, and they basically have NOTHING to even look at. A one carat round or princess or smaller emerald cut was all to be had, though they are all eager to call in stones for me. Oh yes, I was warned about the dangers of online buying, and one "jeweler" (a kid) dismissed my query of other lab grading: "What about AGS?" "Never heard of it." "Really? Well, what about EGL?" "Never heard of it. Ours are rated by the best lab, IGI." IGI? The best? Hmmm.

One nice jeweler said the EGL could be fine if you examine the stone carefully, etc., generally concurred with its'' soft grading but said ''buy the stone and not the paper'' and this was the best jewelry store, the most quality, by far, of the lot of them.

It''s so odd how ignorant those sales people are.

Okay, so, please, any advice on viewing stones in my home?????? She is coming over in three hours! I am nervous. Is there any resource I can find that will give a "quality" range for things like depth, crown, pavilion, table, angles, etc. for oval or emerald stones, so I can make sense of the proportions when I see them or think about them later?

Am I making any sense?!

thanks.

Jeannie,
I have already posted numerous times on the same thing over and over.

For the certs (taken from Oldminer's AGA cutchart so you know that I am not pulling this out from my bottom:
Depth 60%- 68% (You don't want it too deep otherwise it will look really small - less is better)
Table 55% -65% (Ideally, I like the table to be a little less than the depth - smaller table = more fire)
Crown height 10% and upwards (I like those over 12%)
Symmetry VG or better
Polish VG or better

Indirect light (shaded natural sunlight)
Check out all the steps. Look for a beautiful balance of narrow light and dark lines in the center (you don't want a dark chunk in the middle) with tiny sparkles like crushed ice at the two ends. It should look very white with hints of strong dispersion at the ends.

Office/Home fluorescent light
This is when the stone looks the most plain and white. When moving the EC from side to side, look for fire (rainbow light) moving from one end of the long steps to the other end. The corners should still sparkle like icy crushed ice.

Sunlight
Rainbows should flash everywhere. You should see large flashes of coloured light. It is mostly likely to be more
impressive from a few feet away than it is from a few inches away.

Knowing all these, compare all the 3 diamonds that she is bringing to your home side by side. I highly suggest investing $25 in a Idealscope from Oldminer since you are really nervous about this expensive purchase (and rightfully so), so that it can take the place of your inexperienced eyes.

Enjoy!

Ovals and ECs are VERY different, in both cut and type of sparkle. You need to decide if you want one or the other. Once you've decided on a SHAPE, then just concentrate on that shape and keep looking.

Chrono,

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I know mine is a boring, repitive inquiry...one amidst many, confused newbies who want great rocks.

I know I need to decide on the shape...the emerald cut i saw tonight totally rocked but i really think it''s outta my league.

i posted the stats on the stones, both the emerald cuts i''ve seen, and the ovals. i''d love your opinions on them. the ovals were pretty but i could see the "warmth" in them when I put it next to the cool, cool, icy emerald sparkle monster

. The one I probably cannot have

jeannie, who is fortunate anyway, with a great guy who is willing to buy her a diamond.

But what do you see when they are by themselves? That is how you should assess any stone.

However, looking at the other thread (which is getting really confusing when there are 3 threads all talking about the same diamonds), all of the ovals and ECs she looked at are either G or H. So they all should look equally white side by side. None should show any warmth.

Thus I have the inkling that
1. The uncerted stone(s) Jeannie was shown and told is a G really is NOT a G
2. The other stones with certs saying they are Gs must be lax/inaccurate and probably a H/I (or poorly cut that the warmth shows through)
3. The EC could be rated a F or high G or well cut that it looks cooler.

Oh, thanks Chrono. I guess I missed the others.

Could be what you suggest then.
