I asked a local store the other day for the GIA number so that I could look up the report at home. The salesperson (who was the owner and is supposedly related to a diamond cutting family in Israel) told me that he can show me the cert, but they do not give out the numbers for security reasons. He didn't expand upon what these "security concerns" are. It seemed a little strange to me, since another store gave me the number no questions asked.

This store has given me the best upfront pricing on a GIA-cert diamond. It's very competitive with online stores. He's been in town for years but was a wholesaler until recently when he opened up a storefront. The store is very highly rated so far on various local online review sites.

Thoughts on this "security issue"? Can it be a legitimate concern that I could do something fradulent with the number? Or, should I be concerned that there's possibly fraud on his end if he's not willing to give me the number to look up the cert independently of what he showed me on paper?

Sounds to me like they're afraid of competition....I can't imagine any security concerns.
With the GIA number and the weight of the stone, the report can be pulled up on the web, and others can make comments about it- maybe that's what they're trying to avoid.

Maybe it's a virtual inventory stone and he's afraid you will get someone else to source that diamond?

I went the same place. If the stone is big enough that the report has a clarity plot that in combo with the other info sorta puts a quick end to any faked reports issues I'd think..!

That's my guess.
You are threatening the "security" of his income.

your vendor is full of B.S... :!:

Yup, BS.

Don't be bullied. Tell him you want a copy of it or you'll take your business elsewhere.
