Searching a diamond from James Allen.. Help!

Hello all!

I am purchasing an engagement ring from James Allen (this ring: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/contemporary-rings/diamond-solitaire-ring.html).

Now I should find a diamond to go with this setting. I am looking for a 0.50 - 0.60ct. round brilliant diamond. My price range is under 2000$ (for the whole thing). How low should I go with the color and clarity? I would like to have an exellent cut, polish and symmetry though. Is there something else to consider?

Are you determined to stay at G color or above? Have you looked at an H or I color stone in real life? I ask because I can't tell any color difference down to I, but the flaws in your SI2 clarity stone are noticeable and may not even be eye-clean. I would also ask where on the diamond the feather is located, from what I've heard, feathers (aka cracks) on the edge can cause the stone to be less durable and more likely to break. Cut looks great though! Have you requested the idealscope image for it? I think you're shopping in the right place, I've had great service from James Allen! :))
 
Thank you missjuliajoy! I forgot to say that I have been thinking colors G-I, so any stone from that color range would be just perfect! And I think I will ask for an eye clean S1/S2, or then go with a VS1/VS2 clarity stone. I haven't asked any information yet about the diamond I posted. I think I will send inquiry about few diamonds at the same time, as soon as I find something I like :).

I've read that although the cut is graded as excellent, there should be some measurements to consider? Something with Crown and Pavilion angle? I'm such a newbie... :tongue:

I hope you understand what I am trying to say, although english is not my mother tongue and I am not familiar with the right terminology..
 
I agree that I'd go down to H SI1, personally. Is this ring for yourself? The only thing I wanted to mention is that with a small stone, a wider band (shank) tends to make the stone look smaller. Most people like a thinner shank with a small diamond which makes the stone appear a little larger. But if that is the setting the recipient has chosen, then that is fine. But it is also good to spend the maximum on the stone and just get the lowest priced setting. The setting can always be changed in the future.
 
Yes, the ring is for me. In fact for me was important to find a square shaped ring, that was as wide as possible (minimum 3mm). I would like the diamond to be just a little wider than the band. And around here where I come from a diamond that is over 0.25ct is considered a huge one, so I think my ring should get attention enough :D.

I like this one - just below the 0.5ct mark price increase, but sacrificing little in spread.

JA representative told me that with my carat range I could go down to S1/S2, since it would most likely be eye clean. What do you think? That would bring the price down, but is it worth it?

What should I ask from JA about the diamonds I am interested? Idealscope image, and wheter it's an eye clean? (but this only if it is S1/S2?)
 
I am obviously really bad at making my mind.. When I first started looking through the diamonds, I was definitely interested in princess cut diamonds. Then I wanted a brilliant cut.. And now I found a nice princess (I VS1).. Or what do you think? Only thing is that symmetry and polish are VG, instead of excellent. Other really nice choice is the RB Ravinmad posted!

The G SI2 is a good diamond. All the inclusions are located away from the center table. If you're going with a prongs setting, ask your jeweler to hide the inclusions under the prongs.
 
After visiting my local jeweler, I decided to go with a thinner band after all :). I am probably taking this JA setting:

As JA provides information and idealscope images of 3 diamonds, I have one more diamond to get information about. Now that the band is going to be cheaper, I could get a little bit more bigger diamond..? But is the visual difference between 0.44ct and for example 0.55ct noticeable? So is it worth the higher price?

On its own the difference may not be noticable but side by side it would be noticable. I definitly think PSers would notice
the difference on its own but a *normal* person may not. We have something called DSS around. When you first get a stone
it seems hugh because you are not use to it but after a month or two it seems to shrink right before your eyes. My advice
would be to get the slightly larger stone if it fits in your budget. In the long run I dont think you will regret it.

If you are comfortable with the price increase, BIGGER IS WORTH IT! Tyty333 is right on the button with the DSS - you'll get it, we all get infected by it! Just resign yourself to it... :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: ... and go for the larger stone now -you really wont regret it.
