Last week we received rings from Diamond District and took to have checked. Everything was off at least a grade or two. The pear stone on certificate was graded s1. It was close to 3 carats. However, it was easy to see the main flaw and then found on certificate. So, I take it some certificates or appraisals are way off. I gather, I should look at stones GIA or AGS. Are there any other places that appraise that are reputable? WHich appraisals groups should we avoid? We were thinking of going to NYC diamond district this week. Would this be best bet or could internet be better? We don''t want to keep spending money on rings and have them checked, be disappointed and send them all back. This could cost near $200/pop. My interests are now on GIA specs of a near 2 carat pear stone of at least S-1 clarity. Of course, I am hoping for a decent color. I was looking at G and better but tell me opinion on H or I? I have found a few rings that seen ok in that color - such as http://www.fancydiamondinc.com/3_stone_diamond_ring_C38.htm . Is blue nile pricey compared to other online vendors? I know their diamond appear all GIA. I also want platnium. I am so sad right now that all rings must go back and need something to make me feel better quick.

THANKS for any suggestions

Thanks, I will look into -

I also found this ring today: http://www.fancydiamondinc.com/past_present_and_future_diamond_ring_C86.htm

Alhough I am not sure about the color - based on another post the Table/Depth/Clarity and all seems good.

Anyone thoughts on this and the color?
You can't really judge a pear by the numbers unfortunately or just the depth and table, these can only be used as a guide and detailed photos and other images are whats needed to get an idea of how it will look and perform. An I colour of that size might show a little warmth and as it has an EGL grading report, some experts believe than EGL can be less strict on grading at times than GIA, so there is a possibility the colour is lower than an I - same with clarity, so you would need to check carefully that this pear is eyeclean to your standards. EGL USA is said to be the most reliable EGL lab and I can't read the report clearly enough to see which EGL lab has graded this diamond/ ring. What I would recommend if you really like this ring, is to make the sale final on the centre stone checking out with an independant appraiser and make sure the vendor has a good return policy to allow you time to do this, but if you don't want to continue getting appraisals as you search then maybe look to see what else is out there before commiting.

I would say though I know it can be challenging finding the right pear, but take your time - the right diamond will show up!
