Was given my great-grandmother's flush mount Edwardian/deco platinum engagement diamond ring for graduation. It was never graded since it was a family item. My great-grandparents were pretty well off and the 1+ ct oec Center stone was very white and clean, unlike a lot of those older stones that are clean but not so white. The ring got scratched on the large center stone from daily ranch work I guess. I stopped wearing it after I saw the scratches and put it away. Years later I took it to small independent Jeweler in town 30yrs for resizing up and weeks later when it was ready, the scratch is gone (along with much engraving on each side of Band) I asked what happened to the diamond scratch and he said he polished it out. Is this possible or did he switch my diamond? It still looks like a high-quality stone but I thought it was strikingly white before. I have a fairly large jewelry collection and have seen a lot of diamonds but I'm no expert . We never discussed the scratch being removed. The band is no longer round
on the bottom but sort of squared off and as I say the filigree was removed some which I didn't expect. This Jeweler mostly seems to set colored stones in settings not do a lot of casting work. I had used him once before to alter a necklace but then someone said they would never work with him. Said it was easy to close up shop go to city buy a stone, and switch out a stone for a less valuable stone to make a several thousand profit in a day during an off-season. Do people really go to this trouble? Would a tiny small town Jeweler have the equipment to polish scratches out the surface of an old high quality diamond? Any experts out there now? Appreciate info
