Scratch on Table - Emerald Cut

After my wife got her new ring resized we noticed a hairline scratch near but not at one of the prongs. You can feel it with your finger nail and you can see it reflected internally in the right light. The stone is rated VS2 and we are not sure if it was there before resizing but she thinks it wasn't. We have only had the ring about a week and can return it to the original store. I can post some pictures in a bit. We can only see it at certain angles in certain lights but we can feel it. Is this a problem? Its a .7 H-I VS2 Emerald.

My wife really loves the ring but if we bought something that is not worth the price then she will take it back.

Any thoughts?

Since you took it to another store than the original store for having it sized, chances are very good that you have invalidated the original warranty.

In addition, if it did not have the scratch prior to the sizing, why would you even think of taking back to the store that did not have the chance to do the sizing? To me that seems highly unfair.

If I am reading your statement incorrectly, then I apologize for being shocked.

Also, as tyty333 asks, does it show on the GIA report? If not, it is likely that the damage was done after the ring was purchased. However, unless there was a microscopic exam when the ring was dropped off for sizing and again when it was picked up, it is going to be impossible to say, legally, whether the damage was already there, or occurred at the store, or after it was picked up.

If it does show on the report, then it was there when it was purchased. This may or may not be a reason for you to now reject the diamond, but you may still have invalidated your warranty by taking the ring to another store for sizing. Most retailers will not, for obvious reasons, take liability for other's actions.

No GIA report with it so that's why we were unsure. Original store doesn't do sizing and takes returns. The wife was just wondering if this could easily be caused by sizing. Would a surface blemish that you can see at an off angle be part of a VS2 stone and can these things get polished out? The stone was not removed to size the ring.

I'm starting to think that it was probably there on purchase because I was reading that it is pretty rare for this to happen during sizing. If it did happen it was due to stress and a weakness in the stone from the original mounting. If that is the case she is worried this stone will get worse the more she wears it since it is close to the prong but not at the prong. I was also reading this could just be a blemish that she noticed in putting on the ring a different way in different light at a different angle. I just cant find out if a hairline surface blemish would make this stone not at least VS2 as advertised. We haven't had it independently appraised yet, but she is planning on it.

If a surface blemish can be VS2 and there is no real risk of further damage then I think she will be satisfied. She really likes the ring and doesn't want to go through the hassle of exchanging it if it is nothing to worry about and was probably there when we bought it last week. She really likes how for being an I it looks more like a G in most lighting.

If the stone was not graded by GIA and does not have a GIA lab report, it is very likely that the EC is not an accurately graded VS2, hence the inclusion could have been there all this time but you only just noticed it. An accurately graded VS2 EC will not have any blemishes visible to the naked eye from the top down view. The problem right now is that nobody knows exactly what you purchased (clarity and colour are very likely to not be as stated).

More than likely not by GIA/AGS standards. (I would never say never though).
