scratch on shank of e-ring.

Hi there,

I have noticed a small scratch on my newish diamond ring.

I usually remove minor scratches on my jewellery by buffing in my vibratory finisher with walnut media.

I then finish off in my ionic cleaner.

My jewellery has diamonds in it.

The diamonds come out looking good but I don''t want to put my expensive e-ring in the machine and ruin it.

You''re the experts.

What do you think?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apparently ground walnut shells are good for blast cleaning....

I'd personally just take it to a jeweler. However, you're going to get more, so you might try learning to live with it.

I would sort of expect that to just result in polished scratches unless you’ve got either a burnishing media like steel shot or something a little more abrasive first. I suppose it depends on the scratch. Walnut shells won’t hurt a diamond but I wouldn’t put them in with steel if it were me. It probably won’t hurt the diamonds but I wouldn’t be surprised if it irrecoverably screws up your steel shot.

Well, it''s like getting a scratch on your new car - the first one hurts waaaaay more than the rest, and they are a fact of life.

I got a noticable scratch on my ering about two weeks after getting it, and it bothered me for about a week, and then I realised that with everyday wear you will get little scratches and after a while you don''t even notice them anymore. You will also realise that no-one else can notice them anyway.

You can just take it to your jeweller every 6 months or whatever, and have them give it a polish (along with checking your prongs, stone setting etc) and it will come up looking new.
