My fiance proposed three weeks ago with a beautiful Scott Kay M1127RD10AA with what he was told was a .75 round SI2 H (however nothing to substantiante this as the jeweler did not give my fiance anything except his receipt when he purchased it). It needed to be sized so we called the jeweler where he purchased it and I was expecting to be told that it would take at least a few days as it would have to be sent to Scott Kay. To my surprise they told us to bring it in and it would be done in about a half an hour. I also had him size my wedding band which my fiance gave me about four years ago...it has sentimental value so it wasn''t intended to be our wedding band when he gave it to me but we decided to use it. The band has 12 small diamonds across the top, nothing too special but I love it.
Well, when I got it back my head was pretty much still in the clouds so I didn''t notice much. However after a few days passed I started noticing flaws in the diamond as well as the setting. One of the side prongs was completely smashed and sharp causing it to catch on everything, the side of the prongs had deep scratches, the shank was not round (flat on one side), the engraving on the side of the shank was a very dark grey in one area and the shank itself was much thinner than what the other Scott Kays were. It was also very grey and dull...not the feedback I''ve read about palladium.
I called the jeweler and finally got the supposed certificate which said it was an SI2 I but on the receipt it said it was an SI2 H. I took it to get appraised through an AGS certified appraiser. He graded it an .70 I1 I. I was already seeing discrepancies and was not happy. Then came the grand finalle....I was looking at my wedding band (the sentimental one) and noticed that when he sized it he smashed one of the diamonds and one of the prongs. At this point I pretty much couldn''t hold back. I went to the store and showed him all of the discrepancies, he said the flaws on the setting coudl be taken care of with polish and that he would fix the diamond and the prong in my other ring. He acted like it was no big deal and why was I making a big deal out of it....that''s very frustrating.
So he has both rings now and I''m supposed to pick them up Wed 11/12. After thinking about it more I called him today and told him that I just wanted our money back. He told me that he woudl not give me a refund because the ring had been altered. But that he would fix my setting. Oh and did I mention that he claims to be an authorized Scott Kay dealer but isn''t listed on the SK site and does not have a SK order book As for the certificate, he said he woud have the correct certificate when I picked up the ring. How does a jeweler let you walk out of the store without a certificate and even when I went to pick it up it was the wrong one???
I am seriously at a loss...my boyfriend and I have waited 10 years to get married and the ring means a lot to me and the fact that I will forever think about this is jsut killing me. the total sale was $5300 and I really don''t think there is much he can do at this point to rectify the situation. I love my setting but I want it to be smooth and beautiful and i want to knwo that it''s an authentic Scott Kay.
So sorry for the long post!! Any advise is much appreciated.
