My fiance proposed three weeks ago with a beautiful Scott Kay M1127RD10AA with what he was told was a .75 round SI2 H (however nothing to substantiante this as the jeweler did not give my fiance anything except his receipt when he purchased it). It needed to be sized so we called the jeweler where he purchased it and I was expecting to be told that it would take at least a few days as it would have to be sent to Scott Kay. To my surprise they told us to bring it in and it would be done in about a half an hour. I also had him size my wedding band which my fiance gave me about four years ago...it has sentimental value so it wasn''t intended to be our wedding band when he gave it to me but we decided to use it. The band has 12 small diamonds across the top, nothing too special but I love it.

Well, when I got it back my head was pretty much still in the clouds so I didn''t notice much. However after a few days passed I started noticing flaws in the diamond as well as the setting. One of the side prongs was completely smashed and sharp causing it to catch on everything, the side of the prongs had deep scratches, the shank was not round (flat on one side), the engraving on the side of the shank was a very dark grey in one area and the shank itself was much thinner than what the other Scott Kays were. It was also very grey and dull...not the feedback I''ve read about palladium.

I called the jeweler and finally got the supposed certificate which said it was an SI2 I but on the receipt it said it was an SI2 H. I took it to get appraised through an AGS certified appraiser. He graded it an .70 I1 I. I was already seeing discrepancies and was not happy. Then came the grand finalle....I was looking at my wedding band (the sentimental one) and noticed that when he sized it he smashed one of the diamonds and one of the prongs. At this point I pretty much couldn''t hold back. I went to the store and showed him all of the discrepancies, he said the flaws on the setting coudl be taken care of with polish and that he would fix the diamond and the prong in my other ring. He acted like it was no big deal and why was I making a big deal out of it....that''s very frustrating.

So he has both rings now and I''m supposed to pick them up Wed 11/12. After thinking about it more I called him today and told him that I just wanted our money back. He told me that he woudl not give me a refund because the ring had been altered. But that he would fix my setting. Oh and did I mention that he claims to be an authorized Scott Kay dealer but isn''t listed on the SK site and does not have a SK order book As for the certificate, he said he woud have the correct certificate when I picked up the ring. How does a jeweler let you walk out of the store without a certificate and even when I went to pick it up it was the wrong one???

I am seriously at a loss...my boyfriend and I have waited 10 years to get married and the ring means a lot to me and the fact that I will forever think about this is jsut killing me. the total sale was $5300 and I really don''t think there is much he can do at this point to rectify the situation. I love my setting but I want it to be smooth and beautiful and i want to knwo that it''s an authentic Scott Kay.

So sorry for the long post!! Any advise is much appreciated.

Have you contacted Scott Kay's main office to see it this is an authorized dealer? Maybe you could voice a complaint with them. It'd be nice to get a full refund.

How could you leave without the cert? You don't even know what you bought. I hope you can resolve this. I think your jeweler is incompetent and trying to deceive you.

Scott Kay's website says they prefer all repair services to be done in their studios (retailer is supposed to mail it to them). And if you let your jeweler work on the ring it becomes their responsibility. Your jeweler should never have touched your ring unless your authorized it.

Unfortunately my fiance purchased the ring...he doens''t know anything about jewelry let alone diamonds. He just felt that since this guy was a supposed friend he would''nt cheat him. And I must say.....I''m 100% more knowledgeable today than I was three weeks ago.

I''m having a hard time getting ahold of SK directly. I emailed them but have not received a response. His name is not listed on their website though. I don''t know what else to do except make him continue to redo the ring until I''m happy. And if that means giving me a brand new setting ordered from Scott Kay sized already then that''s what it''s going to take. I''m jsut so angry that he even allowed a piece of jewelry (an engagement ring no less) out of his store in that condition!

Thanks for your response....

Not only is there an issue with the setting but what about the stone? I have a feeling they will not be able to give you a cert like promised. They promise one thing and hope you are so happy to be engaged and too shy to ask the finace about such details, that they end up getting away with murder. There should be a price difference between a certified and non-certified stone. The fact that they didn't have it available twice and still haven't gotten it to you after 3 weeks is not good news.

Send SK an email and include the details of the retailer, your name, your contact info, dates, explanation, etc.

Scott Kay is pretty hard to get a hold of. I've tried many times over email and never heard back. Yet they took the time to send me junk mail (booklets) to my home address. Anyhow, I suggest contacting an authorized dealer on their website and see if they can help you contact their SK contact. They might be able to help you send it in... it will cost some $$ to get it fixed though. As far as I know, SK prefers to do all the work themselves. If it's modified in any way, they might not deal with it. I bought an ering from Robbins Brothers which they botched the setting of my diamond. I had to get it sent to SK to replace the head. It was going to cost me around 300-500?? But I was lucky and they fixed it for free. Good luck.

Demand that the ring goes back to Scott Kay to get fixed....

I''m actually requesting that he order a new setting from Scott Kay already sized....I don''t want him touching my ring. Problem is that I still don''t know if he''s an authorized dealer so how will I know if he really ordered a new one or if he just repaired and plated mine. I was able to squeeze the name of his Scott Kay rep out of him but he wouldn''t give me his contact info, of course. So I did a search on linkedin (social networking site) and found the rep and emailed him. We''ll see if he responds.....

It would probably be better to call SK instead of waiting to hear from them by e-mail. I hope you are able to get a new ring made in your size by Scott Kay. After this ordeal is over I hope that you do not EVER return to this store!

The saga continues, but I think it is nearing an end.... I was able to contact Scott Kay directly, they were very nice and helpful. The jeweler is an authorized retailer, they said it was a mistake that his name was not listed on the website. I told them about my experience and suggested they research the jeweler and his poor workmanship. They said they would follow up.

I wanted to send the ring directly to them, however they don''t accept items directly from the consumer, I have to go through an authorized retailer. I ended up taking it to Ben Bridge, this particular location is an authorized retailer and the employee that helped me (purely by chance) is an AGS certified appraiser...one of the very few in my area. He was awesome!! He spent about an hour explaining all the different aspects of my diamond and showing it to me under the microscope...it was great! We ended up sending it to one of their jewelers that specializes in palladium. I''m very nervous because my other situation was so over the top horrible, but I''m praying it will be ok. He''s going to try to have it back to me by Thanksgiving...I''ll keep you posted.

So someone other than Scott Kay is working on the ring again? Why did you decide not to send it to them directly?

For your sake I hope this saga is almost over, I can only imagine how frustrated you've been!
