I''m putting mine in the mail on Oct. 1st, which is exactly 7 months before our wedding. I received the magnets last week and with our busy schedules I figure it will take us about a month to motivate and get all the envelopes addresssed. About 80% of our guest list is OOT (as in 10-12 hours away) so we thought 7 months in advance was a good amount of time- early enough to make plans and start shopping for cheap flights, but not too early.
I did send my Mom one already and she has it on the fridge. My FMIL did not get one yet because she would carry it all over town and show it to every single person in the grocery store, so she''s not getting hers until they are all ready to go out.
My wedding is 2 weeks before yours and I think I''m sending mine in November. I think anywhere from 6-8 months is standard. I''m going for 8 b/c a lot of people travel in the summer so I wanted to get it out to them before they firmed up plans.
My wedding is approx 10 months away (same day as marlie), and they went out on Monday. A lot of the people who received them expressed thanks at getting them so early because they now know how to plan their summer vacations/travel/etc. Our area also is hugely popular in the summer. I put magnets on the back of all of the STD's so they can go on a fridge. I also wanted to send them out early because I wanted to spread the word about our wedding website. FI and I have a lot of family out of the area that wanted to know rather early so they could coordinate vacations around the wedding (i.e: not vacationing during the wedding/taking their vacation up here to NJ/Philly).
I think it really depends on how far you and your guests are travelling. I''m having a destination wedding and I''m sending them out just under a year in advance! I was actually told by quite a few folks that for a destination wedding, the earlier the better.
If your wedding is local, but you have a lot of guests travelling, I don''t think it is toon soon at all!!
Here''s a little write-up I found on STD etiquette:
"They are generally sent at least 4-6 months prior to your wedding but, if you are planning a destination wedding, for example Hawaii it is strongly recommended that you send them 12 months in advance if not longer. For seasonally busy and tourist locales or on or around a holiday it is best to send them 9-12 months in advance. Your guests will then have ample time to make all the necessary arrangements needed to be a part of your special celebration and may even extend it into a vacation of their own."
For my wedding that was in July, we sent the STD''s the second week of January. I tend to think that unless the wedding is before June or a DW (More than 80% of guests have to make serious travel plans), then STD''s shouldn''t be sent before the first of the year.
We sent ours out 10 months ahead for a destination wedding, mostly because family was starting to drive us nuts with questions. (Sending the STDs only partially helped, even with a website listed, but at least I didn''t feel like I was keeping everyone in the dark.)
Thanks all! Yeah we have about half out of town guest and local new yorkers. I think we are going to do a combo holiday card/save the date around november. I realized yesterday that I should really be focused on finding the right dress! Thanks again for all the helpful advice!
Heh, ditto to my date twin. My bridal shop is irritated with me because I'm apparently three weeks late for my first fitting...whoops.
We sent s-t-ds around March, I think, for our October wedding. Can't remember exactly when, but it seemed to be fine, and we have a lot of OOT guests. Don't stress about them, it's not worth it (yet, at least)!
