Sapphire halo question & an I/J marquise diamond

Hi everyone,

I've been searching and searching and can't find the answer to my question. This always seems to be the perfect place to get the answer to all jewelry mysteries! :) Apologizes if this has already been discussed to death somewhere else, but I can't find it.

I just bought a new marquise diamond and am searching and searching for a new setting as it's currently in a temporary setting until it finds its forever home. Too many choices...

Specs on the diamond: 1.9 carat, I/J , med flour. It doesn't hold much color, but it's definitely a warm stone.

My question is: will a sapphire halo make a warm diamond look warmer or will it whiten it?

I've seen lots of halos on Fay Cullen's site and it's hard to tell from the pictures what the real life result is.

Can anyone help? Thanks! :wavey:

Here's the sapphire halo that is a potential contender, although I'd do it NS for my taste with some other modifications:

I think if the diamond is visibly tinted, it may show a little more in that setting. But if it faces up pretty white, it should be fine. I like the contrast between blue and white, not quite as much between blue and cream.

Thanks diamondseeker2006! I'm with you on the cream and blue. I think this baby is going to stay a solitaire.

Ask and you shall receive on PS. Thanks again, have a great evening!

Since I just went through this myself.....

It seems that if it is tinted then a sapphire halo will show some warmth, however it might not bother you. It didn't seem to bother me at all. But if you are color sensative I would recommend doing an emerald or ruby french cut halo which might off set the tint a bit. Below are some examples of lower colored diamonds with french cut halos. I'm not 100% on the exact color as of course I didn't save it, but they should all be under J/K.

I hope this helps you!

FYI- if you want a custom french cut halo then I would contact Adam at Old World Diamonds- ask about his candelight collection. IDJ has the Gabriel settings and halos can be switched out for Colored stones and of course if you have a bigger budget then Single Stone or 23rd street jewelers!

No worries and since your diamond has med. flur I would assume it would make it look whiter so it shouldn't show as much color as the examples I posted. I hope you post your lovely! I'm a sucker for these art deco settings and have wanted one forever.

yeah i was going to say i would imagine blue might have a more yellowing effect than say a red or a green, particularly the green

heres an emerald cut I like to oogle from time to time, they say its a K, but sense they cant prove it i assume lower

I think your stone with fluorescence might be fine! I don't love the lower color diamonds as much with the colored stone halos, but yours should look whiter compared to the ones Sarah just posted.

(I adore the emerald cut ring nielseel just posted, but that diamond can't be showing it's true color if it is K or lower.)

nielseel, you'd never say that was a P by the pictures!! And that emerald cut diamond is getting added to my eye candy folder. Wow!

nielseel, sarahbear621, and diamondseeker2006, yes, it has an amazing fluorescence (which I love), but it depends on the sun and lighting. It does face up a little whiter than the emerald halo RB posted, but because it's a marquise, it does hold more color than a round. When it's a sunny day, this sucker is icy white with blue sparkles. It's vanilla white most of the time, I'm a sucker for antiques and antique jewelry, so it really works for me. Some lighting (specifically driving on a cloudy day in my truck with the UV filters on the window) makes it turn dark and I can't believe it's the same stone. It happened for the first time two days ago, it's been a sunny couple of weeks apparently! It's not often, but it does happen.

Yes, I'll be posting pictures and asking lots of questions along the way as I can't make up my mind! Hubby is great, but he glazes over after a while

Ladies, I was just looking at your posts and rings. Can I just say "WOW"

I'm sure you were talking to these other two ladies more than me, but you're still sweet to include me. Your marquise makes me pretty jealous I'll be honest. Too pretty. For this setting are you still thinking you'll be able to E/W set it? I know there was a question sense your stone is so large and your fingers so dainty

While not my favorite art deco design I have to say that 10k is crazy for .85ct diamond- unless I read that wrong! But I know that ebay store has beautiful things that tend to be higher in price. I actually really like the airline in the ring and you don't see that often with this type of setting. Good find for inspiration Nielseel!

Thanks for the compliements! DS really has the more diverse collection. I'm extremely jealous of her asscher with pink sapphires sides. Plus Nielseel you make me want a pear so bad. So classic and sleek. The fancy shapes are definitely calling to me since seeing your lovely ring.

nielseel, your pear is STUNNING. I love the halo. It looks so streamlined, the workmanship is beautiful, and it looks beautiful on your hand! You were absolutely included.

The stone fits EW when I lay it across my finger, but my pref is for it to be NS. I have an EC diamond that I reset EW in an antique repro setting for a RHR and I love it. That said, I did find it made it shrink.

Thanks misskittycat. There are too many beautiful options!

Sarahb - I was thinking the same thing. They will never sell it, way way way overpriced.

Oh i agree an O under 1 ct marquise in a 2k (TOPS) setting?? ridiculously overpriced, however, still the best comparison i could find.

ETA thats for the compliment, i always appreciate people who can appreciate a pear. you should probably get a ring in every shape... i feel like thats a good idea  ;)

You're worse then Enrechni!!!!!!! Talk about enabling! I wish though! I would love to own a pear (spelled correctly this time!) and an antique emerald cut! I have to be realistic though and realize that the size I would like are way out of my budget plus I don't know need multiple erings. I have gone down that path and it doesn't work for me. So on to large colored stones for my pear and EC fix!

yeah id love a EC but i know my sausage fingers need larger than i personally can afford. If i had the money Id be offering half the price of that EC i posted from Mel's antiques. And Id put that bid down every week till they excepted. Its been for sale for like 2 years I think, they'd have to be willing to go down.

And plus, pears face up big, you could probably be happy with only a 3ct.

oh and BD I'd LOOOVE to see your E/W EC you were talking about

Yes, SarahB, colored fancy cuts are definitely a way to get a fix! My husband tells me that staying off the internet and PS would help a lot with my addiction.

nielseel, here's my EW EC. It's a little obnoxious  but I love it.

Specs (as I know you all are suckers to it!): I/J, VS (don't remember if it's a VS1 or VS2), 1 carat, .64 melee done in J diamonds, set in platinum. The warm diamonds with the cool white metal looks like it got plucked out of my grandmother's jewelry box (don't I wish...!!). The bench who set the diamond for me couldn't believe it was a J EC he figured G/H range. It faces up really bright and I rarely get any yellow tinge at all with this.

I got the center stone at a bargain and the whole ring cost me less than $2,500 :naughty:

Sorry for the shaking photo.

Bah that's great! Please post that over in the smtb forum 5k and under thread!

Re: Sapphire halo question & an I/J marquise diamond

What in the world?!? I am in love with that ring! And under $2500? Are you freaking kidding me?!

Thanks sortmon. What a pretty ring! I found a few on Lang Antiques as well last night. The diamonds in my color range look great with the sapphires.

I don't know... I LOVE the setting, but I'm also loving the solitaire look. I'm not sure how I'll feel 5 years from now to have blue on my left hand while rocking a yellow sapphire RHR (another project stone waiting to be set... haven't found the right inspiration yet), or when I finally find a large baby pink pear stone for a RHR. Glad I don't have to make a decision today! :)

misskittycat, I was looking at that setting again, it's beautiful. My biggest issue with a double halo is my diamond is about 12.4 mm in length, there's no way my finger could manage a double halo. I think it would sit half way up into my knuckle.

Rosebloom, I know!!! I bought the diamond second hand. Long story short. They bought it on ebay for $3,000 and it was set in a cheap halo (although the lovely 25 full cut 1 pts in G color are being saved for a project!), didn't work out, selling 1/2 price, I offered $1,200 and got it. I got the setting done for $1,125 + $75 for setting the diamond and another $50 to adjust the sizing. It's heavy and gorgeous. I saw it on JbEG just after I got the EC. I had the melee increased from a 1 pt to a 2 pt to add the extra heft to the whole piece. Glad you like it!
