Sam Shepherd, the actor and playwright, has died from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's Disease. He won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1979 and was nominated for an Oscar in 1984 for best actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Chuck Yeager in "The Right Stuff". He and his partner, actress Jessica Lange, had three children who survived him.

So sad. I loved him. I had no idea he was struggling with Lou Gehrig's disease.

I did not, either. I have to confess that I did not know his plays, which are much celebrated off-Broadway, but not only did I love his acting, I loved the way he spoke. Both he and Jessica Lange were intelligent and politically aware. They were more than that, they were intellectual and thoughtful. It was a pleasure to hear him speak about anything. They were such physically beautiful people, but they lived far, far from the limelight, interested in matters that engaged more of them than their external selves.
