So having finished my emerald ring earlier this month it’s time for my March project.

I’ve had these cabochon rubies sitting in my jewellery box for almost two years and think it’s time to get them set.

Going with a design inspired by Cartier.

Just dropped them into the jeweller this morning.

Very nice colour and great setting inspiration, and I too prefer raspberry/pink reds myself.

Can't wait to see the finished earrings!

So I’ve gone for smaller melee - micropave, as it’s a little more affordable.

Do these look balanced or should I make them smaller? I feel the settings are a tiny bit big for the rubies.

I’m also not sure I like the lines of diamonds I’d prefer they were set in “rounds” to circle the stone.

The size of the earring setting is good to my eye in terms of coverage, but if you want the proportions to be more similar to the cartier, you’ll need to make it a tad bit smaller. I do agree that setting the melee in circular/oval patterns would look better than the lines. You could also graduate the size of the melee - going for something a bit larger near the ruby and smaller as you get further away. Excited to see these completed!

I prefer the halo look of the pave to the linear arrangement. Regarding size, maybe cut a row and start the tapering to the point sooner. (Does that make any sense?)

Yea I totally see what you mean.

I’ve asked them to scale down the size from 18mm to 16mm, set the diamonds in rounds not lines and increase the size of the diamonds somewhat. Because bigger diamonds can’t possibly ever be wrong

Still waiting! The emerald cab should be done very soon.

I still keep tinkering with the sapphire one. And buying more stones!

Being obsessed with collecting sets and matching pieces I could not resist buying another one of these little cabochons from the same lot as the earrings when it was offered.

I didn’t have a ring in this style so thought it would be fun to continue the Cartier inspired design theme.

Pic from the bench. I go to collect it this afternoon.

So no daylight left when I got home but here are a couple of shots under my bedroom lamp. Despite the crappy lighting you can see what an amazing job they’ve done with the pave and prong work. It’s absolutely pristine and I’m super pleased with it.

Thanks all for the kind words. Not a ring for everyday wear with that cab so exposed but nice for a weekend treat.

Should be fine for office work as well? I wear cab rings all the time.

Yes you’re right. I’m usually quite gentle on my rings - unless it’s after a brunch or girls night out!
