Hi all. I''ve been learning alot the past few months. I''m looking to buy very soon. What do you think of the following stone:

Round 2.01ct
Depth 62.8
Table 58
F color
Si1
Med to Vthk girdle
no cutlet
no fl
polish vg
sym vg
GIA Cert
Price = $15800.00 (approx 27% under RAP)
I''m a little skeptical on the high depth and table sizes. Also the diameter measurements are just under and over 8mm (7.93 x 8.06 by 5.02). It seems small and I''m thinking a good deal of the ct weight is due to the girdle thickness. I''m assuming this will be more brilliant and less firey? Am I being too picky or what?

I called GIA for the crown and pav angles, but they haven''t gotten back to me. The dealer, ''a family friend'', is also trying them since he has no Sarin machine or megascope.

I also have another possible stone in contention. It''s:

2.00ct
G color
VS2
no cutlet
no flr
polish g
sym vg
The table and depths are well within AGS Ideal ranges BUT, the GIA cert comments that the crown angles exceed 35 (which I know means they exceed 36) I''d definitely have to run those in HCA before seriously considering it. BTW how small of a pav angle would I need to offset that? Probably less than 40.6, I think. I was quoted 35% under the RAP on this one. Different dealer.

Any advice is appreciated.

2.01, F, SI1:
Yes the girdle is thick. And you are loosing diameter there. But the diamond is also slightly deep cut. So you loose some diameter there as well. Both are factors in making this diamond look smaller than a better make. A thick girdle is an area for light leakage and extra depth will affect how light is refracted back to the viewer. It looks like this diamond was cut more to retain weight and bring the 2+ carat premium. Price is close to the average PS Vendors are asking for comparable diamonds, based on the limited info you gave.

The other candidate:
If memory serves, the HCA will issue a warning on the 35 degree angle. You didn't provide enough info and I haven't entered a diamond with a warning for a while. Can't comment further as you gave little details.

In both cases, you commented on a % discount off Rap. Sounds like you are being caught in the "Rap Trap" with both dealers.

The girdle does make the fsi1 stone a bit smaller than what it should be.This stone is cut on the thick side on both depth and girdle, therefore it's diameter is less than what a 2.00ct. stone should be.As far as price is concerned it's a fair price, although I think you can get better cut stones for the same amount of $$$$,if you shopped a bit more.

the other stone GVS2 since you mentioned that it has cr.>35%
that would also indicate that the stone is heavy built and it probably has a depth of 62%+.
This would also make the stone look less than what a 2.00+cts. should look like.

for the type of money you want to spend I think you should go for a stone that meets the right criterias of a 2.00cts.
stone.

I would not bet my fortunes (or diamond buy) on the HCA result for this stone: the thick and variable girdle indicates to me that this piece is far from HCA's assumption of perfect symetry on the stones for which it's prediction is realistic. Er... if the source/ price is that attractive I would get this diamond to an appraiser to get some view on it's optics and overall cut quality. IdealScope comes to mind too...

Just my 0.2, of course.

And a Q about the process: why would GIA provide Sarin results? Do they do it? How does this work?
