Please help me find a round diamond...

Size is my biggest concern. I only have about 2000-3000 to spend on the entire purchase. Can anyone provide me with some options?

So the budget is total for diamond and setting? If so, what kind of setting are you wanting to get, solitaire or something else? gold or platinum?

With a 2-3g budget, I want white gold with a solitaire setting. I assume a platinum setting would cost about a thousand so I don''t think it makes sense for me to spend too much on a platinum setting.

Largest I found in a quick search that is cut well enough to really sparkle. It is just under a full carat and has great spread as well.

Another slightly smaller

And one in a higher color. Slightly smaller yet, but just in case you feel J is too low for color.

With any SI clarities, ask to have them examined for eye-clean. You can also request Idealscope images for up to three diamonds from James Allen at no charge.

You can check out James Allen's selection of solitaire settings (it is best to have the vendor providing the diamond also set it). They have white gold from $260 and platinum ones starting at $480, so you might be able to do platinum depending on the stone.

You might also wait and see what some others come up with.

Thank you so much Jet!

Hopefully, by morning I''ll have a couple of other posts. I tried searching myself and I also found a diamond that was .92 carats but I''d much rather have the experts help me. =)

Can I worry less about color with a diamond that is going to be just under 1 carat compared to someone purchasing a 1.5 carat diamond?

My friend suggested I take a look at jewelryexchange.com. Does anyone have any familiarity with them here?

Hopefully, I get some responses to this post! =) I got two recommendations from Jet that Lorelei liked (link below - same diamonds as above)... and my friend highly recommended GOG (where he bought his ring). He gave me two choices. Can you guys help me choose... Which one would you pick? Will I or J look yellow once it''s set?

A. .92 J/SI2 - HCA = 1.4

B. .85 F/SI2 - HCA = 1.3

C. .90 H I1 - HCA = 1.3

D. .83 I SI2 - HCA = 1

Hey NJD, sorry I missed your post last night.

As I understand it, color can become more perceptible the larger the diamond due to longer ray paths (if I am incorrect, someone can correct me) I don't think the difference between 1 and 1.5 carats is enough to make it that noticeable, however.

I and J seems to be the point where many people can start to detect a hint of color from the side--it is much more difficult to detect color face up with a well cut diamond. They are definitely not yellow, more of a warm white. Think the difference between a soft white light bulb and a cool white one. Seeing the soft white by itself, your brain just registers it as white light. It is not until the two are side by side you realize the difference. The difference between D color and J color is the same principle, but the actual color difference is less. The vast majority of a time, the colors seen in a diamond are what is reflected from the environment so the body color has less effect than most people think. All that said, unless you know your girl wants a warmer colored stone, J is the lowest I would go.

GOG is a great vendor and both of those stones are very well cut. I would like to see an IS on the James Allen stones before comparing performance, but here is what I see so far.

.90 H I1--Most likely is not eye-clean, I know you said that your main concern is size, but inclusions, once seen, have a way of attracting the eye. Once you know where they are, you tend to look at the imperfection instead of focusing on the beautiy of the stone as a whole. If you really feel the inclusion will not be an issue, the overall light performance of the stone is very good.

.83 I SI2--Lovely. Very similar in personality to the .92 J SI2 from James Allen, but a bit smaller in both weight and face up size.

One of the nice parts about buying from GOG is that both these stones have the lifetime guarantee, in case you think you might ever want to upgrade.

EDT: Here is a video on diamond color by GOG. It gives a good idea of how subtle the color differences actually are: http://vimeo.com/3288695
Also, if you are near a Jared's you might go look at some of their Peerless diamonds in different colors to see in person.

Jet - Thank you very much for the explanation. That''s very helpful. I like both vendors b/c of their upgrade policy and their buyback policy. Which one would you purchase? It sounds like you like the .83 ?

Oh by the way the guy from GOG said the .83 carat one is a "really clean SI2" for what that''s worth...

I''d want to see the IS for the .92 from James Allen. If your main goal is size, and the Idealscope image is as good as I think it could be, that would be my choice. You wouldn''t go wrong with the .83, either.

Ditto for me...I would further investigate the .92 for size. Post the IS image and if it looks good that could be
a winner!
