So it boils down to Round Ideal-cut, J-color, SI1-clarity, Round, 1.31-carat Diamond for $5850 or Princess Cut 1.49 Carat K Color VS1 for $4550. I have seen both of them and round diamond has more sparkle than princess cut. Both look incredible though.

Which in your opinion is a better buy overall in terms of holding its value and a good investment over time? Thank you!

What do you think your GF would prefer? Is there family or a friend you could ask?

Things to consider...rounds are easier to resell. The princess is larger carat weight and is $1300 cheaper.

I say, find out what your GF wants or the round would probably be my choice.

Just generally speaking RB is the most popular and therefore the most expensive and has the most tradeup trade in or resale value. Plus it is classic. Also the sparkle on a RB if ideal cut is just spectacular.

Princess even though larger will not face look as large as the RB due to the shape.

i say go for classic RB you can never go wrong.....

Ultimately you should worry more about what shape your girlfriend would prefer. If she never plans on trading up then you shouldn't have to worry about a diamond holding value etc. The vast majority of opinion on this forum is to not invest in diamonds long term. They are a luxury good and depreciate in value the moment you walk out of the store. On the secondary market expect to take at least a 20% decrease, unless you go with a vendor who has a 100% trade in policey etc.
