Hi everyone, I am wondering how much difference there is between I color and J color in an excellent cut round brilliant.. Would you sacrifice color or clarity? J VS2, or I SI2, or save even more money and go SI1-J?

There shouldn't be much difference, but you probably ought to see the two colors in person. I got a J SI2 (eye clean) oval and I like the slightly warmer color the J shows in some lighting. I've also discovered that I like the older cut diamonds, which are frequently warmer. It's a matter of personal preference.

I'd go eye clean SI1 J, and get a bigger diamond.

I went to SI1 J stones for earrings from BGD. I love them! but they are in my ears and they are not seen together (my face is NOT a thin one! )

If a stone is ideal cut, the light will reflect and appear to be a brighter stone. Never sacrifice cut!

Do you think a J is discernible to the I color? Or only discernible if next to one another?

Depends on the I and the J. Each grade has a range. If it's a high I and a low J... maybe in the right light. Also depends if you can see the side of the diamond. But just because you SEE the color difference doesn't mean that it bothers you. Seeing it just means your eyes are working. Whether or not it bothers you is a personal determination.

I would go for the whitest SI1 you can find in budget, personally. Whatever color that ends up being.

Good advice, Gypsy. Thanks for all responses!!

BUT..... would you see more of COLOR or CLARITY, from an observers perspective ???? Do you think people would notice an SI2 before or after the J vs I color just by looking at your diamond?? -- either close up or from a couple feet away.

It really depends on the type of inclusions but overall for me, in this case I think I would notice the color in a diamond before the inclusions. I really have to stare at the diamond to see the inclusions but color can be noticed from farther away. However, I am very color sensitive and this might not be the case for you so I would definitely go and do some real life comparisons.

You will not notice the difference with your eyes between a J and I. 99% of the population couldn't. I would always recommend go for the biggest and best cut stone you can afford, providing its eye clean and J or above.

Hi Chel180, what about if you put the diamond into a four-prong setting, you're saying you wouldn't notice the color change and therefore you would pick the J color and go for the SI1? I ultimately want a 4-prong setting over my six now and this is of concern considering that you will see the stone from the side.
