Hi guys,

I am need of some advice for an online purchase I'm hoping to make, but I am nervous about the fact that I won't get the perfect diamond that my partner deserves.

Can someone have a look at this GIA report? it's a reasonable price (I believe), but I am particularly worried about the cut being 'very good'. I understand cut is incredibly important and I am hoping some helpful people on here can decipher the certificate and report back?

If I had to describe what I really want out of a ring it's to definitely not to compromise cut and polish for size, I want a happy medium being close to colourless and of course 'eye clean'.

This diamond is from a large retail store in Dubai. Any advice welcome.

Thanks in advance everyone!!

The report is very hard to read.

Post the GIA number, that will be easier to read.

Sorry about that :)

Good for you for doing some research!

This stone's cut is not good. It is way too deep, and really reducing spread. It has the face-up size of something about 1.3 cts.

to deep too steep and I'd rather a 3x ideal cut stone that is G si! quality then going for the F colors Vs2....as in the long run its all about the sparkle and the cut. Just my HO..........

ideal cut stats - yours

Table 54-58 56
Depth 60-62.3 64.5
Crown angle 34-35 37.5
crown perfent 15.3%
pavilion angle 40.6 40.4

HCA Tool is 2.7 PS ers usually rule out stones over 2.0 so I would reconsider the purchase of this stone.

Thanks so much for your help guys! I'm so glad I asked now.

To be sure, what should I go back with to the Jeweler as a minimum requirement? I am definitely on board with what you are saying about an ideal cut over size or colour.

I will post back with what they send back if that's ok, I don't want this to be a drawn out process.

Regards.

While good stones exist outside of these parameters, this should help narrow it down:

Depth up to 62.3, hard cut off at 62.5
AND
Table up to 60, hard cut off at 61
AND
HCA of < 2.5, hard cut off after 3.0: https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

Ok, THAT said, based on the GIA report of your initial pick, it could be a really nice stone, but probably has slightly reduced brilliance compared to a more conventional ideal cut. It needs to be priced accordingly, cheaper than a GIA EX 1.4 ct with medium blue fluoro.

Ok great that is perfect.

Just a thought, am I better off trying to just find a diamond first? Perhaps through a website like Bluenile, rather than back and forth between a Jeweler? Or is there a international registry that I could access, perhaps with advice from here that the Jeweler in Dubai could then set the diamond on my choice of ring?

At this stage the Jeweler is only giving one or two options at a time, this is a large Jeweler that I am sure has access to a huge range of diamonds. IM just concerned I am going about this the wrong way.

I am purchasing this ring from Dubai as I know others that have had a positive experience with this Jeweler and saved a lot on the total price. I am also in Australia if that helps.

Regards.

Hmm, if you are in Australia, I see little benefit to you buying from Dubai because you don't get to see it before you buy it... and if you are buying sight-unseen, you definitely need to work with someone who will give you pictures. Can your Dubai jeweler get you pictures, or possibly Ideal-Scope or ASET images? ask them.

The first choice is too risky for an unseen purchase.

Hi again!!

I got a positive response from them regarding photos or further assessment prior to purchase, so I am confident I can get enough information to purchase with a level of confidence when required.

In the meantime, I have been given two more GIA reports, can these possibly be assessed?

Numbers; 2186591126 and 2166858315

Thanks again!!

As an Australian living in Dubai, I would personally recommend you stick with USA online dealers as you have a wealth of reliable information available to you about them via this forum especially in terms of cut grade, returns, upgrades etc. many of the U.S. dealers will be able to set the stone for you or send it to one of their recommended setters. If I were buying a large diamond, I would still buy from the U.S. even tho I live here. Just my two cents ...

Hi Blingobsession, thanks for your feedback.

If I was to take your advice with buying from US and getting it set somewhere else, what online places would you recommend for both stages so I can do some research on them.

While I have you, $43,000 AED (no haggling) is their price for that first diamond set with a diamond band. Are the US stores able to provide simlilar prices for diamonds than from Dubai, with a bit of patience and perhaps luck? Or am I better to pay a little extra for a 'more reliable' shopping experience?

I was always under the impression it would be cheaper from there than anywhere in Australia and because I had a contact there, this would be the best solution.

I am so grateful for the responses here it's amazing how complete strangers are willing to help me out, I'm truely thankful.

Do they have to get the diamond into their store before they will take a picture or can their supplier give them a picture?

#1, sure, get a picture. Only thing that sticks out on the report is "very good" symmetry

#2. I would probably pass.

Hi JulieN,

Thanks for your reply. I am starting to get the impression I am better using this site to source my diamond, I have made a search and managed to sort it by HCA grade and there are some with H&A images and pictures included that fit my criteria.

Is that enough information to ensure a diamond is suitable for me? Or am I still better off sourcing a third party to carry out further assessment on the diamond even though it's from a supplier on this website? Is that possible?

I guess the next process is finding a suitable place to get the diamond set.

Thanks again!

Just to address this question:

James Allen (jamesallen.com) and Blue Nile are both very good indeed, with the former you can view the diamond too and request up to three ASETS, and a large number of Pricescopers have bought from them. Both provide reasonably priced settings too.
I would personally look through James Allen, and get Pricescopers to help you narrow down to three possibilities, to then get a set of ASETs.

Other places commonly used by Pricescopers, where you also can't really go wrong, are Brian Gavin Diamonds, Whiteflash, Good Old Gold and Wink's High Performance Diamonds, to name but a few. All have excellent reputations, will provide you with a top notch diamond, and can also sort out a setting.

One bespoke setter, who can also source you a diamond and can create a hand-forged setting, and is spoken very highly of on these boards with consistent good reviews for quality and customer service, is Victor Canera. You can (I believe) also get a diamond sent to him from Blue Nile or James Allen for him to create a setting for.
