I''m hoping you guys can give me first impressions on a stone I''m considering. I haven''t seen it in person, as my friend is handling talking to the actual jeweler but I did get the cert number to look it up. Unfortunately GIA''s online reportcheck tool (www.gia.edu/reportcheck) left out the details that Cut Adviser requires. Blah to that. The jeweler claims the cut is ideal though. My friend is going to the store later today or later this week to look more closely at the stone and to get the details from the cert that I asked for :)

I''ll fill in more details as I get them, but here are the basics. I value everyone''s input!

Round Brilliant
Measurements: 5.74 - 5.78 x 3.61 mm
Carat Weight: 0.74
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VS2

Proportions:
---
Depth: 62.7 %
Table: 61 %
Girdle: Thin to Medium, Faceted
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: Faint
Clarity Characteristics: Crystal, Feather

So I managed to get a copy of the cert for this stone, but it''s from 2002 and does not indicate crown or pavilion angles. This bothers me a bit. Can I ask anything more from the jeweler? Should I avoid?

Without the crown and pavilion angles as it is an old pre cut grade report, we have no way of knowing more about the cut, but the table is large, generally smaller tables are preferred. If your jeweler has access to a Sarin, then that would give us the angles, but personally from the info we have, I would keep looking.

Also just because the jeweller uses the term Ideal Cut to describe this diamond, does not in actual fact mean it is a well cut stone. Are you open to the possibility of buying online? If so, you could give us your budget and desired specs and we could find you some diamonds you might like. Alternatively, if you prefer to buy from a store, then go with a jeweler who can show you some AGS0 and GIA Excellent cut grade, see which ones you like, get the proportions then report back. Also unless you want E and VS, you could consider F to G colour and even SI clarity if eyeclean, but that is just a suggestion!

listen to lorelei!!!! Without the numbers, you can''t determine if the stone is an ideal cut like the jeweller says it is. With the stats listed so far, I ''personally'' wouldn''t consider it an ideal, and if it is a GIA cert, it would only be considered an excellent cut if it was tops by their standards. Look for another, with the updated certs or even buy online. Go to the PS vendors that offer great return policies, upgrade policies and customer service. You will save A LOT of money for a QUALITY product... As stated above, give PS your budget and what you are looking for, and something will be found that will be great!

Yes, the term "ideal" gets used waaaaaaaaaaay too loosely in this industry. With a budget limit someone could easily suggest better options on here.

From there E color is second highest you can get and VS2 will be eyeclean, it''s a no-brainer type purchase. If a diamond of this color/clarity isn''t good enough for you then your issue will most likely be size, not color or clarity.

I'm considering purchasing this diamond: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4356/

It is smaller, but the cut ought to be closer to ideal. My main concern is that I haven't seen it in person. Should I worry about this?

What do you ladies think? Would you prefer the better cut stone to a larger one? Based on the dimensions, the stone is only smaller by 0.2mm in each direction, but I would imagine this is still noticeable when comparing rings.

Added 8/18 2:10pm EST

And to respond to the budget issue, my total budget for the ring is $3,500. I am hoping to have the center stone mounted in a white gold setting with pear-shaped side stones. I am hoping for pears in the range of 0.20-0.30 CTW.

Good Old Gold came up with a price of about $3200 for the entire ring (Ingwar 14k white gold mounting). The other jeweler (for the 0.74 E VS2) came up with $3500 for the whole thing, and that's with the jeweler custom building the mounting in white gold based on pictures I sent him.

Thanks Sparxs!

I would MUCH rather have the GOG diamond prestj than the first one you mentioned, it is a beautiful diamond - no contest!

I agree, that GOG diamond looks like it''ll be really beautiful. Good luck!

DITTO!!!!!!!!!

And I hear WAY too many horror stories of custom made settings done off a drawing........I would ONLY trust that sort of work to say WF or Leon.

The GOG route sounds like the way to go to me! They have a setting you like AND a GREAT diamond!

You can''t go wrong with anything from GOG.

I would pass, the table is way too big for my liking. I would do some more reading about the term ideal first on here before you buy anything. Are you open to buying online?

I would also have trust issues with your jeweller - that table size/depth is far from ideal in my book.

ETA - I would go for the GOG stone. You metioned the prices are close, but you need to remember to compare cut quality too. The GOG stone will be cut better and therefore worth a lot more. The cut of a stone can have a big impact on it's price, so remember to take that into account when comparing prices.

Don't forget to post pics!!!

I''m glad you decided not to go with the stone at the B&M jeweller - you can do much better for your money.

GOG are fantastic.. you can''t go wrong. :)
