Hello all,

I am looking to purchase an engagement ring.

I can either go for a 0.6 Round or 0.7 Princess both are: H VVS2 EX Cut EX Symetry EX Polish No Fluorescence GIA Certified.

What do you advise? My girl is 30 and conservative but she has no diamonds nor is it standard to offer diamonds around here so she would be happy with anything.

Also what other paramenters should I consider in this purchase?

Thank you for your help.

If all the specs are the same then its down to shape preference. I square princess will look very different to a round so which do you think she would prefer? In general I would say buy a round as more people prefer rounds, than princess'.

Also we would need to see photos of the actually stones to till you which one our preference.

What sort of setting do you want? Some shapes tend more to some types of settings.

The round will face up bigger too, if that is one of your concerns.

Check the dimensions if it is. Most likely the .70 princess is something like 4.95 x 4.95 mm while the .60 round is 5.45 x 5.45 mm. These meausurements are very loose guesses by a layperson, but I hope you get the idea.

Is it really a noticeable difference? I know the surface of the diamond isn't flat so may be an oversimplification to call the area of a RB diamond (pi)*radius^2 and the area of the princess cut as diameter^2, but it seems like the surface area should be comparable. I'm not feeling motivated enough to draw the problem out and do the trig so I could be off. I'm also a completely new to diamonds so I could be, and probably am, missing something else here.

a round, it will probably look bigger and perform better.

Only in places where diamond engagement rings are common do some women want something different, I think.

You can view them locally? I'd just get the one that is prettier.

If a ring is not standard in your area, I'd DEFINITELY be asking your FF what it is that she would prefer. Maybe a diamond isn't even something she'd want (Oh!!!  The horror to say that on PS!! :wink2: ) but if she does want one, I'd get it clarified with her before searching one over the other.

They are 2 different looks so IMO, her opinion counts!

I would strongly advise asking her what shape she'd like. Round and square... it doesn't get more different than that, and if she's like most women then she has a preference on this very basic question!

1. RBs of this size will have larger facets than a 3+chevron princess, larger facets permit bolder flashes of light vs. smaller, faster twinkles. An RB or 2chevron princess will have a more in-your-face type of light return that many people's eyes interpret as "brighter".

2. Visual size difference is surprising, squares are same size different orientation. RB diametre is measured edge-edge of the actual stone, does not consider the up and down of crown-table-crown traversal so no need for any trig ::)

Princess cuts are not graded for cut quality by any lab other than AGS, so unless you buy a diamond with an AGS lab report, you don't really know what cut quality you are getting. For this reason I suggest a round for ease of buying, if there is no stated preference for princess.

Thank you all for your help.

I will go for the round 0,6c H VVS2 it has more sparkle and I think it looks better.
Can`t ask her what she likes best cause it would kill the surprise but she is a lady and almost all ladies love diamonds :)

Darn it...

The price difference from the Round 0.6c H VVS2 to the 0.7c H VVS2 is 500USD...

What do I do.

I am already way over my budget but....

Any comments

Drop clarity all the way to SI, it'll be easy to find an SI1/VS2 that's clean to your requirements in this size range, and you gain nothing by choosing higher than necessary clarity.

Exactly.

you can go to I SI with a GIA or AGS report and not notice any difference. Check out some online stores, they might be cheaper.
