I know that RB doesn't have a great reputation here, but I didn't know about PriceScope back in 2005 when I bought a 1 carat RB (F/SI2/ideal cut) for $7195.

That relationship has long passed and I still have the ring. I'm in a new relationship that is amazing and would like to either sell the ring or trade the diamond in at RB and get another ring (to hopefully propose later this year).

So, today I went to RB and I have to spend $14.2k-ish and then I get a $7195 credit for the trade in. I asked the saleswoman to show me what she has in the G/SI1/ideal range and she came back with a 1.5 carat $19+K stone. Um lady, $5k over budget isn't exactly what I was looking for. Then she showed me a 2 carat I1/F/"good" cut (depth was 65%+) with strong fluorescence that was around $14,500. I'm like, no.

Then she tells me there is a 1.85ct F/S12 that she can get into the store for $15,495. She has no idea about the cut though. I said "OK", since the deposit to get the stone in is refundable. I'll see later this week if it's any good.

Would you continue down this path or would you just take the huge loss and sell the ring on ebay and buy something at a reputable online retailer? I'm sure I spent about $10,000 on this ring with the platinum setting (custom Brian Gavin semi-bezel, in platinum) and would "maybe" get $5k max on ebay. I wonder if the RB mark-up would offset the loss. Also, RB has financing options, which unfortunately I will need if I want to propose this year.

Help! And thanks!

Is it lab graded?
Is so, what Lab? If it is GIA please list the lab report number. If it's AGS please give us table/depth/crown and pavillion angles.

There are a LOT of options that you might have that you aren't aware of. Ebay is not the only one. But we need more information to be able to help you.

Diamond prices have gone up a lot since 2005.

Is the stone eyeclean?

I don't know any of the specifics of the stone they are bringing in, other than 1.85ct/F/SI2. No cut/lab or any other specifics boo! Will know more when it's in. I'm guessing for the price ($15,495), it will be crap.

In terms of my 1ct stone, it's:

GIA
1.0 ct
F
SI2 (eye clean)
table: 57
depth: 60.6
girdle: medium, faceted
culet: none
Finish: exc polish & sym
Fluor: none
6.46x6.51x3.93mm

Where would you sell it?

Please post GIA lab report number.

thanks!

looks like HCA is 2.4

Can we get a pic? I'm just interesting in what the setting looks like . Or is it only the stone

I'd try to sell the stone myself. don't throw more money away by shopping at RB...

I am inclined to agree. Sounds nice, high color, over a ct, custom plat setting from a well known PS vendor . I bet you could get a fair price on loupetroop

Hmm. It does look eye clean. That's good that you have such a clear photo of the arrows and the clarity that will help you sell it. You won't get what you paid, that's true. But if you do it yourself I bet you could list it for 5-6k and get it sold quickly. You could consign it for more but my concern there is that consignment takes a commission. Some places will charge you less commission though if you purchase your new ring through them.

thank you all for your input!

I'm glad you posted it on Lt.

Make sure you go post it over in the preloved section of PS :)

Thanks again Niel! Just did :)

That's a nice one. I think you'll be able to sell that easily on PS. High color, eyeclean, nice faceting plus a BGD setting. You'll recoup 6-7K of that. The same stone is going for more now. And it's something we can steer people on a budget toward.

This is likely to be an unpopular opinion, but have you considered ditching the setting and designing an entirely new setting and ring to suit your current relationship? I know that option won't be for everyone but there are a ton of ways to make it a very very different ring and diamond prices have increased so much since 2005 that you'll have to shell out around another $1,500 just for the diamond assuming you get your asking price to get another like for like - 1 carat, SI, F. No idea what your budget is though or what you are looking to get! Just going by the fact that you said you'd need financing for a $14,500 ring and a ring with the same specs as the one that you're selling is around $8,500 plus another $1,500 for the setting. You're already up to $10,000 with no option for financing through most PS vendors I don't think, perhaps someone else can confirm or correct this though.

I think, as long as I knew, as a woman I'd rather have the diamond unset, re-certified, re-polished if necessary, and blow the rest of the budget on a lovely pair of sapphires or side diamonds for a 3 stone, a halo by one of the pave setting masters here, or something else. Unless you could afford to get me a bigger diamond than you got her! Searching BG online stock very quickly a 1.2 - 1.3 carat, VS2 - SI1, F - G is $10,500 - $11,000 without a setting.

I don't disagree with this idea. Though if it myself actually. Just was concerned the OP wouldn't go for it, as I know a lot of people might consider it taboo or bad juju.

But ugh imagine the type of amazing setting you could get with 7k to drop on the setting. Huge three stone, 5 stone, hand forged halo, the options are endless. And the result would be a showstopper.

But as we are jewelry people, most of us would probably love the idea of saving money and making a killer ring. But a lot of women consider getting an ex's ring (even just diamond) a serious no no
