Ritani for Forevermark Setting, which metal?

Well, I understand that, but since we haven't seen complaints about Ritani settings on here that I can recall, they must be fine, I would think!

Ritani is a very well respected designer brand. If my memory is correct, Mr. Ritani worked for Tiffany at one time. Regardless, they make their rings to last and their pave is one of the best for cast rings. I considered several Ritani settings myself on my ring search a few years ago. I wouldn't worry about the plat. mix at all!

Platinum is a little cheaper than gold these days...I just ordered a new setting in platinum, white gold would have been a little bit more.

Aww, thank you! I do love it, but I was never quite happy with it being set so very low. I debated at the time whether to get the Tiffany repro, and once I learned that Vatche was making a really nice one, I decided to go for that since I wear a Legacy wedding band.

You know what? I do now recall where some of the anti-cobalt sentiment came from. It has been a long time since I read this, but I do remember it now. I still think the plat/cobalt is FINE for Ritani since they are fine quality cast settings, so I am not trying to discourage Mike AT ALL! I am just posting this to clarify where the negative posts may have come from:

Since MM does handmade settings, I think that is why he is biased against it.

Yes, MM's website was one of the sites that steered me away as well. I'm sure his choice of alloy lends itself to the amazing & fluid look of his rings!

The ring I have fallen in love with is cast. I've read Plat/Co is great for casting, especially ones with fine details due to its flow characteristics. Also, its flow characteristics limits porosity in cast settings, which is a HUGE plus for me. Couple that with its hardness, while retaining the hypoallergenic properties, and heft, durability of plat as opposed to WG --- we have a winner, for me!

Plat/Ru and Plat/Ir are excellent for hand-made settings, I read, due to being much easier to work with by hand and to work harden-- unlike Plat/Co that is more brittle for this purpose. If I were to have a hand-forged setting made, I would have absolutely NO WORRIES about the alloy chosen by the vendor as work-hardening significantly increases the hardness and resistance of the piece. Which, I love!

And, I can't wait to see your diamond in a Tiffany replica! I looove that 6-prong solitaire!

I would do palladium white gold because it should look pretty white even with the rhodium worn off, and it will not patina like platinum.

I would do palladium white gold because it should look pretty white even with the rhodium worn off, and it will not patina like platinum.

Ditto. Palladium white gold is the best of both worlds--no yellowing like nickel white gold, and no patina like platinum. Perfect!

I sometimes wonder if what people think is a patina on platinum is actually just a bad casting, platinum castings are prone to porosity.
I see many platinum rings with ultra fine porosity that gives the surface a dull grey/soft look, workshops will often burnish the surface of the casting (or laser weld the surface) to give it a nice luster but because the porosity is though the whole ring it doesn't take long for the dull grey look to show up again once the outer skin gets worn away.

No patina?!? I had always though palladium developed a patina, but I guess that's the Palladium 950 & not the Pd/WG. Wow!
Now this has my wheels turning again..... hmmm..

White gold is going to lose metal over time regardless of the alloy. And I'll remind you from the link below that even wg with palladium as the alloy has to be rhodium plated if you really want it white.

That's crazy.

I am going to say that I have not found that to be the case in the pricing I have done lately. Even though gold is a little higher than platinum at the moment, an 18k gold ring is only 75% gold whereas a platinum ring is 90-95% platinum (and I think the plat alloys can be very high as well...iridium is running $1k+ an ounce).
