B agreed to wear a gold band. (gold is his preferred metal) Not meant as an E-ring. Just a band.

This is more like a test to see how well he does with rings.
To shorten the story: He has an infection. Causes swelling. Used to be REALLY bad. Like his arms and fingers would double in size, get cold, and be unable to move. Not as bad now. Just a little swelling sometimes.

Since we are looking at rings for me (WhiteFlash) and talking about moving forward in some kind of near future (not near enough, but it is progress), I''d like to get him a ring so we can see how it works. Make sure he doesn''t have any allergies to any metals. See what kind of sizers are needed (if any).

What finger should he wear it on? Left hand ring finger? Right hand ring finger? Left hand middle?

To get a more accurate idea of the swelling, I think it needs to be on the left hand. Would it be strange/inappropriate/etc. to ask him to wear it on his ring finger?

Also, any other suggestions about where to get an inexpensive gold band (since it is just a temporary thing that will be replaced with either an E-ring or WB) or what width is best for people with swelling problems or any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

I personally would not have him wear it on his wedding finger. Thats part of the fun AFTER you get married, to me. Unless it IS a "mangagement"

ring, then I think its a very sweet idea. Otherwise I would go with the right hand ring finger. You never know, he might even like jewelry after, happened to my Dh, now he wants a RHR lol.

I agree! I am definitely not a doctor, but I would assume if he was to have a reaction to the metal, etc., it would be the same for either hand. I would probably have him wear it on his right ring finger, not the left. That finger is sacred, lol.

Regarding the swelling, make sure you get the correct size for him. You wouldn''t want it to be too small. And finger size can vary between a persons two hands, so make sure you have the correct size of the exact finger he will wear it on.

i would probably suggest a wider band (4mm and up), and I would say a comfort-fit band would be necessary in this situation. They seriously feel a hundred time better on the finger.

Let us know what you guys choose .. and post hand shots

Aww a training ring!

If you''re concerned about the left hand swelling, I''d put it on the left hand middle finger.

The hands have different activity levels, depending on which hand is dominant, and I susupect you''d see more swelling etc in the right hand because it''s so active (if he''s right handed).

The higher karat you go in gold, the less likely there is to be a reaction, so if 14 k doesn''t work out , try 18k, if that doesn''t wotk out, try platinum - it''s fairly inert.

Good luck!

Comfort Fit looks like a good option.

WF has a 4mm yellow gold (B''s favored metal) for $240.

I''m checking around at some of the local places (Blue Nile, Zales, etc. -- just for the training ring) to see if they have anything worth looking at.

If you''re just trying out metal, try weddingbands.com. They are BY FAR the cheapest I''ve seen.

Thanks for the tip. Much better prices than WF.

We were picking up our new dishwasher today and found a local place (International Jewlers) that is going out of business.

They''ve got a 6mm comfort fit gold band. A little flatter than 1/2 domed.
$212
(And B sort of liked it -- which is why we''re looking at the other location instead of just buying)

Got the ring.

6mm 18kt $89.00

B liked the yellow gold. Half dome was more comfortable for him than the comfort fit.

I asked if he wanted to wear it on his left middle finger or right ring finger. He''d rather wear it on the left ring finger. (fine with me, the real one will be nicer anyway)

Doesn''t work. Fits sometimes. Way too small others.

Ideas?

What do you mean? Did you get the wrong size? Do his fingers swell? My fingers swell when I don''t drink enough water or get hot. But that just means I get a 6 or 6.25 instead of smaller so it''s comfortable all of the time, and I can always get it off.

He has an infection so his hands swell sometimes. We got something (size 10) that was a bit too big for him. It ranges from really big (to the point of almost falling off) to really small (to the point it won''t even fit his little finger).

The swelling doesn''t happen as much anymore. Used to be much more often and much more severe (so big he couldn''t move his fingers).

I''m going to try using a micrometer on him again tomorrow to see how his hands change through the day. Might give a better idea what to do.
