i am looking to reset my diamond and i have found the setting for me, but now i have questions on the sizing.

i got my first setting a little over a year ago and it was sized at 4.75. i haven''t gained any weight since, but i notice the ring is tighter. i would think the ring would feel smaller since the weather is colder. i recently went to a jewelers and they were positive that my size was a 5.5. i mean, that seems like a big difference to me. do stores size fingers differently? they had a series of rings that i tried on until it felt comfortable. is 4.75 that much smaller than a 5.5.?

i just want to make sure what i order online will be the right size. i plan on going to another jeweler just to check the size again, but any input would be great.

i would get my finger sized again about noon or afternoon and not in the morning fingers are swollen........4.75 and 5.5 is a huge difference. Why don''t you take your ring and get that sized to see what size it is for sure then probley add about .25-.50 till you like that way it feels

Hmm..it is definately possible for your size to change, but that sounds like alot in 1 yr.

I would ask a second opinion from another store, when your fingers aren''t swollen. But personally, I don''t like tighter rings. I would rather have it a quarter size too large than the opposite..

I have had some issues with different sizing and I didn''t find the answer until I went to Holloway Diamonds recently.

My actual ering was measured at different jewellers and some said J 3/4, some said K, some said K, etc etc. I was worried about having it resized, so the lovely SA took the measurement on her thingy, and then took it the to actual bench jeweller who would resize my ring and it was a quarter size different on his thingy (for want of a better word!)

So, the sizing thingies can vary even in the same stores, so if at all possible (ie if you are going to a B&M) have them check the size on the sizer that will be used when making your ring.

And another note, if you are having you ring sized up or down, don''t state the size you want, ask them to resize a half size up or down, or a quarter size up or down whatever, that way if their sizer isn''t giving the same reading, you will get the change you wanted. ie. if you are sure your ring is a 5.25 but someone sizes it to be a 5.5, if you ask for a 6.0 then it''s going to be smaller than you thought.

Am I making any sense at all here? Hopefully you can understand my ramblings?!

Yes you are love, good advice ! I also got different sizes in a couple places, so buying a US size was nerve wracking !

Another thing to note on sizing...you will wear different sizes depending on the width of the ring itself. I thin thin band will slide over your knuckle and flesh more easily than a wider one will. And when you get several bands together? If they aren''t a bit bigger they can get awfully tight. I have rings of all sizes. Back in the day before weight gain

they told me I wore a 5.75. But when I took that ring to another jeweler, they said the ring was 4.75.

So the new ring they made me, (thin band) they made at 5.5. My e-ring is 6.14 and is loose, but when I get it with the size 6 wedding band and my other thin diamond band, they can get pretty tight - more metal in contact with more flesh. So it''s helpful to know whether you''re going to be wearing a particular ring alone or in conjuction with other rings.

I guess my point is, when you''re checking for size, put on a ring of similar width to the one you''re getting, and get THAT size. Don''t assume that the little narrow ring things will be the size you need in a wider band...am I making sense? All this has just been my observations over the years...

In addition to the ring thickness it''s also worth noting that everyone''s definition of what "fits" and doesn''t is different. Make sure YOU are comfortable with how the ring fits, not just that the jeweler says it is your size. And jeweler''s sizing bands are not all the same size IMO...best to make sure to size yourself with the actual sizing bands from the place who you will get your new ring from to make sure it''s the same.

thank you so much for all your advice. :)

i went back to the same place i purchased my first setting and realized it was sized at 4.5. i am getting my reset at the same place, so i had my finger size rechecked. he again said 4.5 is the way to go since 5 was too large. so for some "looseness" i told him to make it 1/8 of a size larger. i know any larger and it might slip off my knuckle. i''m used to wearing my rings loose, but i''m afraid to go too loose on such a precious item.

i''ve been wearing one of my other rings with a thinner band that is a 4.5 just to check the comfort. i am going with a thinner band in my reset so i''m experimenting. it does feel tight at this point. do you think i will be able to tell the difference at 1/8 a size or should i go larger? (he didn''t have anything between 4.5 and 5, so i couldn''t really verify)

Fingers do vary with the temparature along with other things which bodies go through. the biggest problem by far is that ring sticks used by stores to neasure rings are not calibrated properly. My partner does repairs for a hundred retail stores and we supply calibrated ring sticks to every one of them because communication of finger size has been such a large problem. Calibrated ring sticks are available, but people tnd to buy the cheaper tool not realizing the problems associated with their use.

The relative width of a ring also has a dire effect on how tight or loose a particular size might feel. Wide wedding bands need to be made larger to fit over knuckles than narrower rings. It is good to commumicate what size ring sample fit your finger, what width the ring size sample was, and for the jeweler to use his experience to make the right sizing decison to fit your finger to the ring being sized. Noi question, this is best done in person with the jeweler, but often this just can''t happen.

dave, thank you for your input. the jeweler measured my current ring on what i am guessing is a calibration stick and it was at a 4.5 (it was slightly off round tho). after trying the different sizes on the ring sizer (the large ring with the smaller rings on it), he again noted that a 4.5 would be best. my knuckles aren''t that much larger than the rest of my finger, so he said it is better to keep it fit. my problem is that i am used to wearing rings loose, but i understand that i wouldn''t want the ring to fall off, let''s say if i was washing my hands. we opted for the comfort fit and size 4 5/8 just to avoid any of the tightness like on the original. i''m hoping it helps.
