I received my engagement ring Thursday night. My FI bought it in a size 5 from Blue Nile. We quickly realized it was too big, and went to a local jeweler to get it sized down to a 4.5.

It's still too big, but only below my knuckle. If I got it any smaller I would have a really hard time taking it off. It's driving me nuts the way it is now, though. It's constantly spinning, slipping down my finger (only to the point where it hits my knuckle) and ending up facing my palm.

What is the solution for a situation like this? It's 105 degrees out and has been for the past few days, so I am assuming that my fingers are swollen and when winter hits it will be even bigger?

Here is a photo to show how much space there is between my ring and my finger. It's the perfect size around my knuckle, though. I have no idea what size I am below my knuckle. Probably around a 4?

If anyone can offer any advice, I greatly appreciate it!

how bout sizing beads or the horseshoe sizer, so you can still slip if off over your knuckle, and it won''t spin too badly once it gets past your knuckle?

It''s completely normal to have more room fully on the finger compared to at the knuckle and there isn''t a ton you can do about this. One possible sollution is to use a horseshoe sizer. This is a u-shaped sizer that gets inserted into the ring and it closes towards the finger when there is extra room and expands when your finger is larger. I''m not sure if it would do much for spinning, but a few people here have one of these sizers and may be able to comment.

I agree with the horseshoe sizer suggestion. that''s what I would do. I wouldn''t size it down any smaller if you''re having a tough time getting over your knuckle.

Eat a sandwich! Eh, I''m just kidding. That looks like too big a gap to be helped by sizing beads. Didn''t someone invent a kind of hinging ring for people with arthritis? That would mean resetting your diamond though. Hmmmmm. Hope others come up with something helpful ..

yup i was going to say sizing beads. they will keep it from spinning and you will still be able to get it over your knuckle in case you need to take it off. talk to your jewler they can do it for you

i too have heard of the hinged ring too. i guess the best thing to do is take it to the jeweler and see what the best option is

This is a perennial problem many people face. You need to size a ring wide enough to get past the knuckle but beyond it the ring's definitely going to be loose enough to spin. Isn't it about time they break conventions and design a ring that goes 2/3 round with a gap for an elastic sort of band, or an adjustable chain? Just a thought to jewelers out there. There's probably a patent pending somewhere...

I have a similar problem - and I think most people do - my finger below my knuckle is much smaller than the knuckle (even though I don''t have big knuckles). My Grandmother taught me years ago that the correct sizing of a ring should be determined by ensuring the following:
The ring is too snug to take off a straight finger, but
When pushing the ring and knuckle from the underside of my finger, it will slide off.

Once, only once, in my life I did not follow her advice (ajeweler insisted Grandma''s advice was not correct) and the ring fell off my finger at an airport (and was found hours later digging through the cleaning people''s garbage bag - yuck and whew!)

The experts on the site will have more definitive advice, I''m sure. But just in case they are determining the right size by only using your straight finger, this might help.

Don''t forget that when you add a wedding band, the friction and added width will help keep it in place.

There''s not much you can do because if you get it to fit the finger, then it won''t get past the knuckle. Even wearing a wedding band might not help that much because the weight of the diamond will cause it to spin being top heavy. I think your only alternative (albeit costly) is to have a hinged band or a U shaped sizer that expands after it slips past your knuckles. I''m not sure how much the sizing beads will help because the gap looks fairly large.

There are two fixes. The less coslty is a "butterfly" type insert soldered into the ring which is springy and will grip the finger after it gets over your wider knuckle. A much more costly fix, but really the best fix, is one of the hinged shanks which are a patented product that a jeweler must install. They will remove most of the existing ring''s shank and put the main stone on the new hinged shank. One of these actually opens wide, like a tinybangle bracelet and clamps shut, perfectly fitted, to your finger, not your knuckle. Most jewlers who do repairs will know all about these devices The one I am thinking of requires a pin to be inserted to open it up. It has a very well engineered clasping system that is totally invisible when closed on your finger. They are made in gold and platinum.

I have the same problem as you, I''m 5.75 in my knuckle and 4.5 below my knuckle. I got a pad of gold placed inside the shank at the five and seven o''clock position. So the ring will nor turn. I don''t have any problem getting the ring off and on, and at the same time the pad keep the stone facing up all the time.

Good luck..

I hope you have solved your problem by now,,I had the same frustration,,For YEARS I have struggled, so much energy has gone into twiddling my ring..In researching I found Allan Creates,(ringlock.com)he was a little pricey, but definitely worth the small difference. I feel like a new person..The fit is perfect .I unlock the ring and then I have to open it..No chance that it would fall off accidentally. His web site was confusing at first,,I emailed him and it was slick going from then on..He sketched out 3 ideas for my 2 ct diamond,,I picked one..the rest is history..It is so beautiful. He added a couple of little sizer balls(what ever they are called) inside the band,,,I wish I had known about this years ago...I have tried to attach a photo,,no success.
