My fiance has found a ring she kind of likes at Robbins brothers, but I cant tell if its a fair value or not (and everytime I go in there my skin crawls from the used car feel of the place).  I''d prefer to purchase from a reputable online vendor, but havent been able to find a similar ring.  So Two questions (I wish there was a settings forum, this feels offtopic, but I couldnt figure a better place?)  #1  What are peoples general feel with the quality of the settings at RB?  When they say platinum do they mean pure platinum (90% or better) or some lesser platinum mixture?  Are the rings hollow or solid?  And secondly, has anyone seen a setting like this anywhere?  The important details being the square edges and the ring being smaller at the bottom than top?  Thanks much for any advice!

Something wacky going on with the attachment in the last post, try #2

I know what you mean about RB....my bf and I wanted to run out of that place!

Anyway, that setting is lovely, but doesn''t look like something you couldn''t get elsewhere.....is it one of their branded settings (in the gallery on their site?) or can you find any other designer associated with it? I bet if you surfed around Whiteflash.com or dirtcheapdiamonds, goodoldgold....lots of the onilne vendors....you could find something almost identical (or have it custom-made pretty easily--it looks like (in my layperson eyes?) 4 prong with those sort of sq. corners--tulip head??--for a princess in platinum? Kind of like this but w/o the tapered shank?....

Actually she want a different head, something much more delicate, 4 prong though. I cant figure out who the designer of the ring is, but its not on their website. Its for a round diamond. Hmm, I''ll have to search some more websites. It just occured to me to search for princess settings, its relativly simple for them to replace the prongs yeah?

A four prong setting that fits a round would not necesarily work for a princess cut and the other way around... the prongs have different shapes.

I don''t think that setting carries a designer name - it the simplest form of stock setting. Every store has some (usually the cheapest). For some obscure reason these are called "Tiffany style" even though they do not look like anything by Tiffany.

You may want to look at Signedpieces and Whiteflash and Exceldiamonds for settings. Between these sites, you will get to see most of the basics and the more popular designer moels. There''s allot more than that!

From the photos you posted, this looks like simply a graduated flat wire ring, then the appropriate prongs soldered in the center.

For a lot f settings to see... you might try www.stuller.com and www.adiamondisforever.com

I don''t think this should be too hard to find, however you could always get a custom jeweler to make this for you.
