First of all, thanks for all the informative threads here. It''s been the most useful resource I''ve found.

Here''s the deal, We''re getting my fiance''s wedding ring repaired. It''s old (grandma''s) and need a lot of help.

It''s actually two rings soldered together.

Metal is platinum.

Here''s what''s being done:

1. Resizing. They are taking it from an 3.5 to an 8.5. One of the issues is that both rings are very thin (worn or pressed) at the bottom. They are going to separate the rings and install platinum half-shanks into them.

2. The baget rails have been flattened or something. They are going to repair those.

3. One of the tongs on the center ring has been repaired using yellow gold and there''s a small breach between the platinum cap they placed over the yellow gold solder. They are going to replace all four tongs with new platinum tongs.

4. Cleaning and all that good stuff.

5. Solder the two rings back together.

For this they would like to charge me $1350. I think this is probably a pretty fair price because I gave him plenty of motivation to sharpen his pencil but he wasn''t able to.

Question for you does this seem reasonable?

Thanks for any insite!

honestly, I'm surprised they are even willing to do it. that is a HUGE jump in size for a setting with sidesstones? It sounds like a lot of work and I could only guess on the price. Quest Jewelers does a lot of restoration work on antique pieces. You could always email them and see what kind of quote they give you just for comparison's sake.

This could be reasonable, considering the amt of work to be done and that with 2 platinum half shanks, you''re also essentially buying a whole platinum ring. I too am surprised they will be able to resize the ring that much, but if they are reworking the rings to such an extent I guess it''s possible! I would at least seek out another quote before you decide.
