Large table + shallow crown = leakage under the table?

Haha. Yes I see it too!!!

It simply looks like an old cut to me...OEC, probably?

Hi Hot!!! :wavey:

Long time no see!!!

I am no expert, but I wondered how clean the stone is or indeed, if it is set in a basket?

Reason I ask is prior to PS and all my cleaning gadgets (thank you PS!!!) when my old RB was set in a solitaire in a basket, I used to see a similar effect because I wasn't able to clean there.

Are you going to give us a wee clue if you have been shopping. ;))

Yes DS it is supposed to be an OEC, but it doesn't have the small table / high crown combination that is typical, so I'm wondering if it is just a plain European Cut? The table is HUGE on it... About 4mm out of the 6mm is table. It has French origins, I know that much.

Any idea on what the brown rings are?

I purchased it with the intentions of putting it in a pendant. It looks quite pretty in real life but the photos of it are just plain nasty.

I have to decide if I will return it.

Hi Susie!

Nice to see you!

Ha ha yes I have been shopping... The late night, spur of the moment, feeling kind of reckless eBay buying kind. :cheeky:

It's not in a basket, I'll see if I can add a picture of the underneath.

I bet it is just dirty, too. I bought a cheap little antique ring a couple of weeks ago and you can't reach the back of the center stone to clean it so it has some dirt that I just can't get off!

Hmm... I haven't cleaned it. Maybe I should do that too.

Could it be the yellow gold setting doing this?

That thought hadn't crossed my mind until Susie mentioned it.

Give it a good old soaking and let us know what happens!!!! :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

Ps I think its looks fab!!

I'll be honest it looks like a prehistoric old cut to me. I love old cuts and I think it's ... (don'tshootme you are in the return window) fugly.

Susie you are too kind! ::)

Nah I cleaned it and it's still doing the brown ring thing.

Gypsy, lol, thanks for your honesty, I appreciate it.

Not worth the risk of taking it out of the setting and seeing if the rings go away then?

So it is an OEC, just a bad example of one and not an EC?

I'm trying to think of the reason I will give them as to why I want to return it.

I'm going to be brutally honest here since you posted in RT and are asking because it seems you are wondering if you should return it or not.

It is simply a very poorly cut diamond. I don't think a label really matters, but perhaps it was an old cut? But not a good one. You are seeing a fish eye in the middle. Have you seen it in person? I suspect it is not very lively. I suppose if the price was low enough (like a few hunder dollars) it could be worth keeping if it has some life, for a pendant. But my suggestion is to return and start over. I think you can do much better.

Do you need a reason to return it?

Kind of.

The policy states that you can return for a full refund if the item was not as described, but in an email the seller said I could return it if it didn't turn out to be what I wanted because she couldn't get me clearer photos of it. I wanted a more solid reason than I don't like it, just to cover my tail in case she goes back on her word.

Thanks for your input Dreamer, I appreciate your honesty. If she will let me return it for a full refund I think I will.

I agree with Dreamer, I think it's fish eye too.

Start out just saying you want to return it. If pressed, if the stone was sold as an Old European, the large table and shallow crown angle is enough to negate that label IMO.

Thanks Dreamer, I will do just that.

Whew! Thanks for taking my comment well hawaiianorangetree and I'm glad you are returning the stone.

Tell us your budget honey and we'll find you something better, I know we will!

Thanks Gypsy! Budget is around $1500 for the stone but I'll have to wait until I get my refund which will realistically take a couple of weeks.

I emailed the seller and she said I could return it no questions asked. Phew!

Thanks everyone again for your help. The stone looked alright IRL but i knew something was up when I got a look at the photos. This place is such a great resource and I feel so lucky to be able to come here and get honest opinions to back up what my gut instinct was telling me.

Thanks again, you guys are the best. :appl:

Post for suggestions when you get your refund. We'll go from there. :wavey:
