How do you know if a stone will have it?

what is a ring of death?

Edit - goodgal, from your recent threads, this stone seems to be causing you nothing but anxiety. At this point I would strongly suggest considering others, if for no other reason than keeping your sanity intact!

I like the stone but the HCA is messing with my head! :errrr: I posted why I am so confused about the HCA! Also I would like to know when looking for stones what to avoid to not get the ring of death which my GIA appraiser said he'd never heard of!

I think the 'ring of death' refers to steep/deep diamonds.

goodgal...I agree with yssie...why not find another RB? there are certainly other stones for you to choose from...

Since you are are on the fence you should ask your jeweler for more pictures and better quality pictures. Many vendors will make you videos of the stone and post them on youtube.

Good gal- by all means, if you're having a lot of doubts, find another diamond....BUT.....
You may run into the same situation if you ask others about the next stone- or put it on the HCA.
If you're working with a seller or gemologist you trust, and youre both looking at stones in person, you need to make sure you're in good hands- then trust your eyes, and the gemologist's opinion.
By all means, use this forum to ask general questions - but from reading your posts today, I can see that you're getting contradicting info from the gemologist and this forum about a specific diamond, as opposed to general info.

please keep the following in mind:
1) very few gemologists read this forum- other than the few very good ones that post here regularly. But if you read a lot of the posts by consumers, it makes it seem that things like the HCA are universally accepted- it is not. It's far more likely that you'll find a very good gemologist that never heard of HCA

2) same thing for terms like "steep deep" and " ring of death"

Stick with a GIA graded EX cut grade diamond and you'll be fine- especially if you're working with someone you trust. If they've never heard of these HCA or "ring of death" it says nothing about their qualifications.

Or you can choose to buy from one of the excellent vendors continually recommended here, and get a stone that will be approved by the vocal majority here.
Problem is, you may actually prefer a GIA graded EX stone knocked by the HCA and some of the most vocal posters here

slg - oh, wow. My mind went all sorts of other places! :halo:

goodgal - the one thing I am not understanding is what it is about *this* stone that has you entranced. Have you seen it in-person, and you fell head-over-heels? Is it a too-good-to-miss deal? Is it from a trusted jeweller? Have you already bought it, and are now wondering what to do?

The first question is the most important - have your eyes examined it in a variety of lights, compared it to other stones of various proportions, and decided they couldn't be as happy with anything else? If they have - then that's all that matters, truly - your opinion trumps any of our opinions or tool's outputs.

To answer your question - clean the stone, then hold it over a brightly coloured piece of paper (paper shouldn't actually be touching the pavilion, just directly underneath). "Leakage" is just areas of stone that permit light to escape through the pavilion facets, rather than force it to reflect internally and eventually leave the stone out the top through the table/crown - you'll see the coloured paper through these areas. As you tilt the stone you'll find that different areas "leak" and "stop leaking" :))

actually have purchased and am waiting but started educating myself after the fact! It is a vendor that has a good rep on here. (Since1910) is their online name. I have known several people who have purchased from them and been happy. The gemologist says it looks white facing up as well as looking close to 2 ct facing up because of the dimensions. He says I will love it. He doesn't know wth i am talking about when mentioning ring of death or HCA so that made me nervous however reading the post stating alot of gemologist don't know those terms makes me feel better. I will have it in 4 weeks and will post pics! :twirl:

Don't you want to see the stone before you have it set? I assume the 4 weeks is for setting. If I was as nervous as you are, I'd have the loose stone shipped to me so I could decide whether or not I liked it.
