My fiance and I just bought a house and we tried to piggy-back the engagement ring on our homeowner''s insurance, but the company won''t insure any jewelry for more than $10,000. The appraisal is higher than that so I guess I''m going to have to look elsewhere for insurance. What are your recommendations on insurance?

Jewelers Mutual is a great company for stand alone jewelry policies.

Some on here have positive experience with Chubb Insurance

Gemshield is great too

For an item over $10,000 I''d go with Chubb, as I believe they have a cash reimbursement policy when you make a claim. (I am not 100% certain of this fact, definitely double check).

Jeweler''s Mutual is also a good choice (I have my rings insured with them, as Chubb won''t take smaller than $10,000 items) but they require you to go through a jeweler and get a replacement, and do not have a cash reimbursement policy, to my knowledge.

Not to mention after having a loss, and speaking with my homeowner''s insurance agent, it is a bad idea to have your jewerly on a rider. A loss will result in your premiums going up, so you end up paying for it anyway, so it wasn''t even worth filing a claim. Separate policy is the way to go.

do i have to have my new ring appraised before getting insurance?

I just recently had my ring appraised with a PS recommended appraiser and she suggested Touchstone Insurance. You can request Chubb as the underwriter for jewelry over $10,000 with them.

Touchstone, is an insurance broker, the underwriter or who it is actually insured with is either Gemshield less than 10k,
ETA: sorry Chubb is the one for 10k or over...

Gemshield can go over 10k. We have a policy for over 50k.

hmmm maybe I was hearing wrong from Touchstone,,, i ensure with Gemshield as well. but mine was under 10k, so he recommend Gemshield over Chubb, but I wasn''t really looking for cash value so that is where Chubb differentiate.
