We just purchased this ring and the only markings it has is the engraving "1667 . L". Does anyone have an idea of what that could possibly could refer to? I can't for the life of me think of what it might mean... Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hmm interesting... the diamond doesn't have those specs according to the seller but I'm not sure how accurate the seller was. They said it was 1.05 ct and J color.
The ring is a purchase from ebay and the person didn't have a lot of information on it and did not say how they got the information. It did not come with an appraisal. It will be here Wednesday and will be taken to the jeweler on Thursday so maybe that will shed more light on the diamond specs.
I can't tell you how excited I am about this ring... it's actually my engagement ring that I helped my boyfriend pick out. Now the waiting begins for him to officially ask me!
Another question, does anyone have idea what time period it would be from?
Well, first off, that setting is gorgeous! I don't know what the stone will turn out to be (like GemFever said, I'm not sure it's going to turn out a J), but given that these days it can cost as much as you paid or more to get a setting like that made ... I think you're in good shape!
If I had to guess, I would assume the engraving was some kind of serial number on the part of the jeweler. It doesn't match any system of hallmarks I'm familiar with, the decimal point is in the wrong place to indicate weight, and the GIA system of lettering didn't come into play until way after this piece was probably made.
Thank you all for your insightful replies! It was the setting that made me fall in love with this ring and I too wouldn't be surprised if the diamond is more yellow that they were saying. We took a bit of a risk on this ring as they really didn't have good pictures or documentation on it. My BF will let me see it when he gets it on Wednesday but then I have to wait until he officially proposes!
Your future fiancé probably should take the ring for a quick appraisal just to be sure he knows the specs and is satisfied with what he paid for what it is.
Hi Liz
We plan to take it into our local jeweler here as soon as it arrives and get it appraised as well as sized. The seller has a 7 day return policy so we will definitely make sure it's what we were expecting. I should know more Wednesday!
BTW, I forgot to say that's a beautiful setting. The engraving is gorgeous and it looks like the setting is in excellent condition. Can't wait to see pictures!
Count me in as another one who thinks that setting is gorgeous - love the detailing. But its hard to believe its really antique as its in such great shape - maybe it just wasn't work often?
It came a day early and I love love love it! Our jeweler is closed today so we were unable to get his appraisal. We went to a different place to get a quick verbal inspection on the diamond and they said the same things as the seller... J color, 1 carat and SI 1 and an OEC. To my eyes the diamond is looks very white. Not like the pictures!
One thing I'm wondering about is the setting. I'm wondering if its actually old as its in such perfect condition. Are there any tips for determining if its old or new?
Yay!!! What a great surprise. You owe us pictures, you know.
J is a nice color. You'll see some tint sometimes, but probably not like the photos shows.
Doesn't matter whether the setting is old or new. It's beautiful and you have a gorgeous ring. Congratulations! I had that one on my watch list and decided against making an offer because the seller didn't have many sales and those sales didn't include expensive jewelry. I'm glad you got it.
You are absolutely right Liz, it doesn't mater if it's old or new as I love it! It's even more beautiful than I ever dreamed of for an engagement ring! Thank you for not bidding on it!
Here are some pictures as promised! I'm having a hard time capturing the sparkle it has though... I apologize!
I took it to work and put it under our UV lamp and it's very fluorescent! A bright blue!
Your photos are MUCH nicer than the seller's photos. I'm glad you got it. I'm looking for a backup/everyday/travel ering and that one is much too pretty not to be the main ering.
Thank you all!!! I'm absolutely in love with the ring! I haven't seen many OEC so I can't compare it to others but the sparkle and they way it flashes totally captivates me! I'm pretty sad that I will have to give it to the jeweler to re-size tomorrow then I can't have it back until my sweet BF officially asks me!
I'm having waaaay too much fun with it. It's not only fluorescent but it's also phosphorescent! Hard to capture with a camera but it's a bright orange right after I turn off the UV light. So much fun! I just asked about phosphorescence in rockytalky as I'm really curious about it.
