Ring box, jewelry box... how do you keep your rings safe and secure

So, just where do you put your Engagement and Wedding rings when you remove them?

Ever since I received my upgrade from ERD and Leon Mege, I''ve wanted a "special home" for my ring.
I''ve searched and searched - thinking about a luscious leather ring box, similar to the ones from Cartier,
then maybe a porcelain little trinket box. I never found anything worthy, or anything that was secure enough.
I just saw this little treasure box at the Metropolitan Museum''s web store.

It''s a Dutch marriage box engraved with scenes of love and marriage. It''s only 2 1/2 inches tall with a
silver overlay. Very sweet and appropriate, I think. I don''t know if the interior is padded - I seriously doubt it.
But that can be solved with some velvet, padding and a drop or 2 of hot glue.

This little treasure may or may not be the answer. Whatever, it''s a tribute to love and marriage.

You pose an interesting question. (BTW that box is gorg). When I am home, and not wearing it, I keep my ering in it''s own wooden box. If on the rare occasion I leave the house without my ring I put it on a little hook that I placed behind the front wall of a small cupboard. If you didn''t know it was there you would never see it. My jeweler suggested doing that to keep it safe.

Just thought I would also share of this...My mother has a $45,000 diamond ring that she doesn''t insure and she just tosses it on a glass ring holder with all her other rings. It makes me cringe!

I think a jewelry box (especially on a bedroom dresser) is the first place a burglar would look.

I think the safest and most secure place is a secret unexpected hiding place that only you know about.
I would certainly not reveal it on the Internet.
If I was a smart burglar wondering where to look for valuables I'd come here and read the responses.

I agree, a jewelry box of course would be the first place they''d look. My question is really
directed at where do you keep/put your ring when you are at home. I wanted a box or something that was nice. (and
easy to hide too! I do have a very unusual place to stash my stuff when I''m gone - and when I''m home too)

Sorry, I didn''t mean for anyone to reveal their hiding places - I''m just curious what others use to protect their rings
from getting scratched, dirty or lost.

Once I am home, I take them off and put them on a Waterford ring holder a friend gave me ages ago. It''s the first thing I do once I am home. That way they are safe and can go unload the car with what ever I have groceries etc...

And I know exactly where they are...

Now if only I could do that with hubby... Cell phone, blackberry , Keys, Wallet and watch...

Drives me NUTSO!!!!!

This is what I was thinking too. I'd be careful about giving out this type of information.

ETA: Bebe, I just saw your reply to Kenny's post. I had answered before scrolling down to your reply.

For something that valuable, I would get a home safe and hide the safe somewhere both unexpected, and from which it''d be hard to move, lol.

I put them in a holder that doesn''t look like it''s a holder. And that''s all you''re getting out of me.

Of course, everything is insured and when I go out I hide the holder and have other stuff out and easily available, if that makes any sense...

lyra, makes perfect sense. I do something similar.

I have ... drumroll, please - an egg cup!

In my defense, I, too, have been looking for a nice box or ring stand, but I haven''t had any luck. All of the ones that pop up on searches are, like, anthropomorphized animals where you can put your rings on kitty''s tail - pass! For a long time, I just stuck them anywhere, but this resulted in one or two panicked mornings where I''d wake up and have to do a sweep of the house (they were invariably on a bookcase).

So a few weeks ago I was in Montreal, and I spotted this awesome shop in the Latin Quarter: this guy made the most bee-yootiful painted porcelain I''d ever seen. Teapots and cups all painted shocking colors, covered with golden arabesques and painted jewels ... and all probably too fragile and expensive to schlep home in my luggage. But he did have a red-and-turquise egg-cup on sale ... so, happy ending! Now my rings have a fancy home, and *I* have a fancy egg-cup!

P.S. - Bebe, your box is beautiful! I hope you post pics when it arrives ....

An egg cup it is! Great idea.

I have my fair share of panic induced searches too. It's an awful feeling. And that is the reason
I want a "special home" for my rings, earrings and watch I take off. I have a bad habit of taking
them off and putting them down wherever I am. Not a good thing.

that is a beautiful box bebe :)

Mine spend the night in the ultrasonic, or in their white ring box. I don''t think anyone but a Pricescoper would know what an Ultrasonic was anyway!

Yikes this makes me cringe too!

please think twice before revealing where you all hide your stuff.

People post lots of identifying things here, pictures of themselves, home, pets, etc, cities you live in, and posting where you hide your jewelery is something that makes me nervous to even read! I won't post any photos anymore because it makes me nervous!

I have 3 spots I put them in if I''m home- depending on where I am in the house. Like, If I''m doing dishes I have a tray by the sink I put them in. But, I almost always wear them, so they are on me :)

Saturday I popped my rings in the US after wearing them all day and got ready to go out with friends. We got about a mile away when I noticed I wasn''t wearing my rings. I freaked out! I had to calm down though because we had stuff to do. Turns out though, FI was able to go back home and get them for me after he dropped me off with the friends (long story). I was SO happy to get them back.

But, everything is also insured too.

If they aren''t on my finger, they''re soaking in cleaner, which is a homemade mix of water, dish soap and ammonia. (I''m only referring to my diamond/plat wedding set, btw.) When I first got my e-ring and we took it to the appraiser, he was ADAMANT that my ring should only be one of those two places. He basically said he would be personally insulted if I let my beautifully cut diamond lose its sparkle to a film of grease, and that even just one day''s exposure is enough to downgrade its appearance. At the time I thought he was a little crazy, but that was mostly because of his delivery (a guessing game where I was supposed to figure out location #2...I was perplexed when even "a safe" wasn''t the right answer...), not his message.

As a result, I get a lot of people asking if my diamond is "new".

I totally agree about leaving the ring in the US. I put mine in there anytime I am not wearing it.
My jeweler leaves his US inside his safe, and sometimes I may leave my ring with him for several days. He will go get the ring out of the US when I come to pick it up.

For security, I think an extra layer of piece of mind could come with placing a box of denture cleaning tablets beside the machine. However, I have a dog, so I am not worried about security. I am more likely to misplace the ring myself.

When I am out of the house, I am always wearing my wedding rings. They are never left home alone. Well, except when I am running, and DH is usually home when I am, as it is so very early in the morning. Not even burglars are up that early (tongue in cheek of course)!

At home I also generally am wearing it. The exception being when I am sleeping and then I put it in its own ring box close by. If for some reason I am not wearing it at home as I am cleaning or cooking or something it also goes in the same place. DH is same.

If for any reason we HAD to leave them at home for any length of time while we were not around, we would find a cozy hiding place for them. That being said, we have things that are far more costly than the rings and we can''t hide everything - especially given there are only so many secretive hiding places in our apartment!

My rings are far less "valuable" than most PS rings around here, but they are still still insured against all perils. And to be honest, I am more concerned about just losing them myself, or fire or something, than I am about theft from my home while I am there. Which is why I always put it in the same place where I won''t lose it if I am not wearing it, and it is close by should I need to grab it and run. And, at the end of the day, I have learned close hand that if someone is determined to break into your house they can find things you yourself forgot you had as you had them so hidden. I would also say that theft from someone you know (by acquaintance) or someone who knows someone you know and can get that kind of information is more likely than from a total stranger. At least around where I grew up and even live now...it is far more common that the victim of a robbery somehow knew the thief, than not. So, you better never, ever, allow anyone in your home to ever, ever, look anywhere!

To me, the more important thing is the people are safe, as however much I love my rings they are still *things* that can be replaced with insurance.

All of my stuff is in a safe whenever I''m not wearing it, secured to the structure off the house. You need an access code or key to get into the hatch to get to the actual safe, which has a different code and key. They key is a backup incase I forget the code or the power fails. I keep it in a friend''s safe. You''d have to know where the hatch was to find it, unless you did a really thorough search.

When we were burgled, I didn''t have the safe, just lots of hiding places. We were hit by real professionals- every single one of these hiding places was found. Clearly, if that''s your line of work, you know what you''re doing. My living room fireplace has a secret panel that slides out if you push a hidden lever one way, then press a certain piece of it just so - they managed. I guess there''s no such thing as a safe hiding place from a talented burglar. From the looks of things when we got home, they went straight for hiding places - not much else was disturbed, no random rummaging. Rugs and carpets were lifted, looking for floor hatches, even.
23.gif
They also knew the difference between good stuff and junk. My ebay $10 pearls (which look nice enough) were left and my old, broken strand of mikimoto pearls was taken. They also took a lot of ugly inherited ornaments and grotesque silverware, for which I was quietly grateful...

It was long enough ago now that I can almost admire a job well done. They were very professional.

Exactly, that is my experience too. Professionals are going to take the time to look in the "safe hiding places". Most people breaking in are not just doing it on an unplanned whim!

They may think it is one of those fancy schmancy coffee things or a sandwich maker.

If I am not home they are on me so I dont really worry about them when I am not home. I have a beautiful candle holder that I have taken the candle out of and when I get home I go there and put everything inside. I used to leave it in a pile on the shelf. DH didnt like that so now they are in a pile, in a candle holder on a shelf. I leave junk in there when I am not home so that an intruder would take that instead of looking for my hidden jewelery box.

Actually,I wear the rings if I leave home. They stay in the US when I am at home. However, only the jewelry I am wearing is out of the safe. The safe is cemented into the foundation of the house in a locked area of the house that is quite difficult to get to. Even then, you would have to lift a heavy cover to access the safe, and the code is a complicated dial. As Mrs. Mitchell said, you look at things differently once you have been robbed. Our robbery was in 1980; they too were professionals.

Wow! How disturbing that a professional thief knew of you well enough to target your home. Do you think you were targeted or maybe it was random? I think I need to rethink my hiding places.

I also keep my jewelry safe and secure (when not on my body) in a safe.

I've been thinking further about this subject, and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't care if burglars cleaned out my house--as long as they didn't steal my DOG! I am not very attached to material things, have no heirlooms that can't be replaced, and everything is insured. But my dog, that would be a far worse loss.
39.gif

Also, Bebe, I have to say I love that holder and wouldn't mind having one myself.

I have a cute small jewelry box that my SIL got me for Christmas a few years ago. I don''t have much stuff, so the ring area is plenty of room for my ering and other rings.

I should clarify what I posted earlier.
1. I haven''t left my house without my ring in years so I don''t use that place anymore.
2. Since I never leave my ring "at home alone" if there was a chance of it getting stolen I am there with "said" person and at that point I have bigger problems than my jewelry being taken.
3. My ring is not worth a fraction of what some of the jewelry on here is worth and it is insured for the full value so I can''t worry too much about it.

But thanks for your concern and words of warning everyone, you guys are great!

P.S. I am on my mom all the time to get her ring insured, especially because it''s mine someday.

I wrap my rings in a small soft cloth and keep it in an empty stridex container with all of my other facial and hair products. I figure if somebody wants to root through the house they''ll head straight for the jewelry box which only has costume jewelry in it.

after i wear jewelry its put on a micro fiber lined tray on my dresser when i change clothes. Before i leave the room its put back in its storage boxes and then back in its hiding place.
