Hi.

This might be a weird question, but didn't find much information on the internet, so thought I'd post here.

Are there any (long-term) health concerns with wearing jewelry made of the popular types of metals:

a) platinum - iridium or ruthenium
c) palladium - iridium or ruthenium
d) white gold 14k and 18k (and the % of other in the alloy) and rhodium-plating
e) titanium Aircraft Grade (6AL/4V) --- I have a dental implant in my mouth made from titanium and I know it's bio friendly material (not reactive).

I kind of "failed" science class but remembering from HS Chemistry, I can recall something about extra electrons, stability something, the whole chemical process involved with making these alloys etc etc...what I'm trying to get at are there any long-term health risks besides the allergy people have to gold (14k and 18k), such as cancer, metal leeching into the skin etc etc (sorry not trying to be a hypochondriac).

I've never worn jewelry in my life and my girl hasn't either so if we're going to be wearing this for a lifetime, just wanted to ask folks out there. Maybe they're some "chemists" out there or just everyday people who's had their rings for a long time.

I'm seriously considering a palladium band for myself (guy) to save some $ to platinum (also seems much lighter too). Palladium seems like a "newer" material in jewelry so has it been long enough to get data back on it's "safety." But looking at it more carefully, seems maybe I should consider 14k white gold for it's strength - don't care if it scratches (I don't care about the rhodium plating, I plan on letting it wear away) as I'm usually outdoors or in the gym and think the ring will get pretty beat up.
Also, can one just leave the rings on washing your hands with soap (bathroom) and all the everyday things (I imagine I'd take it off before showering and doing dishes, swimming).

I was planning on getting platinum for my girl's ering and band.

Some information I found on palladium:
http://www.rochoet.com/palladium.html

" Palladium is chemically attacked by sulfuric and nitric acid but dissolves slowly in hydrochloric acid. This metal also does not react with oxygen at normal temperatures (and thus does not tarnish in air).
This metal has the uncommon ability to absorb up to 900 times its own volume of hydrogen at room temperatures."

Thanks, any comments would be appreciated.

Outside of normal allergies, I don''t know of any long term "health" risks. However, it could pose a risk to your wallet if she decides she really likes sparkly things.

Sorry I''m not more helpful. My advice is, relax.
