Hi all, I need some help here. Either will match up better : A 0.811ct Round with side pears of 0.27ct (each side) OR 1.7ct Round with side pears of 0.27ct (each side). The Pears and Rounds are my existing stones, I am deciding which will be a better match.
Size is more critical than weight here. Remember, when talking about proportions, especially for something like a three-stone ring, weight won't necessarily accurately reflect the ratio.
I'll give an example using rounds, because that's what my fiancée's ring is (three rounds).
You can have two round stones: one is .33 carats, and the other .66 carats. One is twice the weight, yes? But the .33 stone might be around 4.4 mm, and the .66 stone around 5.5 mm. In other words, a stone with half the weight still has 80% of the spread. This is even more important to consider when looking at fancy shapes, as the varying depths and irregular outline can mean a weight might not match up with a size as easily as you'd think.
On my fiancée's ring, her center is a .64 and the sides are .36. Sounds like the center is a lot bigger, doesn't it? Don't be misled by weight; the center is 5.5 mm and the sides are 4.5 mm (or 9/11, roughly 81%).
When looking at fancies for a ring like this, you need to compare size (in millimeters) and not weight to get a more accurate idea of how it would look.
What I will tell you is that a member here had a Tiffany three stone ring with side pears, and her center stone was 2 cts and each side was either .32 or .34. I thought it had perfect proportions. So I would say that the .27 pear sides are great for the 1.7 ct stone. If you put them with the .80, it would look like a bee or something, because the three stones would be flat across the top of your finger. It is better when the middle stone is larger and you can angle the pear sides with the curve of your finger.
I use MS Visio to draw the stones to scale in 2D format, with the pear sides 5.5mm x 3.5mm which are the dimensions mostly quoted for a 0.25ct stones I could find on the web, hope this helps:
Please note it has been saved as a JPEG file and it may not appear to scale when viewed on a computer screen. However, the proportions should remain the same.
As for colour difference, I can see the difference between a G and J when they are placed side by side, and would avoid this pairing myself.
Hmm, I usually try to stay within one color grade difference when stones of a different color are combined. But you have the stones so I would go into natural lighting outdoors and see if the color is too much of a contrast.
Wow! Thanks for the visuals, it really help. It seem that the 1.7ct is a better looking pair. So the only concern is the color difference. I shall take it out under natural lighting for a comparison. As the pears are melee, so I thought the colors difference should be minimal and came out with this pairing idea.
How should I set them so that they don't look flat? Yet not setting centre stone so high, and "hide" the side melee?
