I was wondering if anyone could comment on this diamond enagement ring I''m considering purchasing. If this is not the one, I have two more months before my girlfriend and I go to Paris where I plan to propose to her.

Anyway, the diamond specifications are as follows:

Cut: Round, brilliant
Measurements: 7.05x7.09x4.29mm
Color: D
Clarity: VVS2
Weight: 1.29 carats
Total depth: 60.7%
Table: 57%
Crown angle: 34.5
Pavilion: 43.1%
Pavilion angle: 40.9
Girdle: Medium, faceted
Culet: None
Symmetry: Ideal
Polish: Ideal
Fluorescence: Faint (good or bad??)

This diamond engagement ring is not reprsented as a Hearts and Arrows diamond but does have a very nice pattern. It is however an AGS 000 in cut. My first impressions of the diamond engagement ring is that its icy white, excellent light return and fire with wonderful scintillation. But then again what do I know, I''m just a novice looking for some independent advice...hehe.

Thanks for your input!!

This diamond sounds promising by the numbers and if you've seen it you already know more than we can tell you. If it dazzles you perhaps it should get on that plane to Paris with you.

You asked for comments and after reading this I did have a few to offer:

1. Is the grading report several years old? I ask because in 2003 AGS stopped using faint as a descriptor of fluorescence but 'ideal' in polish and symmetry would indicate an AGS DQD (?) It sounds like the diamond may be set. Perhaps this is a previously owned ring? If it is, and has been worn, the diamond may no longer be of such high clarity depending on wear and tear.

2. It sounds like you have seen the patterning. Do you have H&A photos? Ideal-scope or ASET image? They would reveal some info that's not reported about the minor facets (especially helpful absent a new AGS document with the light performance measure).

3. On Pricescope, new posters are often asked if they are 'married' to extremely high color and clarity. This is because it may be possible to relax some aspirations and price without significant visible difference. Having informed you of that, I don't recommend one way or the other. Some people place value on acquiring the purest color/clarity, or cut, as a matter of personal choice. If D VVS is what appeals to you then by all means pursue it.

Thanks John for your comments. I appreciate the time you spent evaluating the cut parameters. Acutally, this diamond is from Tiffany. I know "Ideal" is not what they use but rather "Excellent" but I use these terms interchangeably because according to Tiffany, their word Excellent is the same as AGS''s Ideal. In the future, I will make the proper references (i.e.: AGS, GIA, etc.). They still use "Faint" to describe the amount of Fluorescence. I''m not sold yet on this diamond. I have the House of Harry Winston looking (which is actually more expensive than Tiffany) and will be inquiring with other reputable companies via the internet. I particularly like the D color and high clarity in diamonds but that''s just a personal preference.

My budget is about $25,000 to $30,000. I just want to find the "perfect" diamond engagement ring for my girlfriend. I think Tiffany was a good starting point and I really do like the diamond they have found. I''ll wait to here from the other diamond places and review the comments on this website before I make my final decision.

And yes, I want to take the diamond engagement ring along with me to Paris. I have a 1990 Dom waiting for us....yummy.

Thanks again.

Hi there-

If you want to save some money, check out this:

Signed Pieces

It would save you 10K... more for the vacation in Paris or for retirement or whatever. It is slightly bigger as well and VVS1. Just a thought if you don't mind pre-owned(they refinish it so it looks new). Also, no tax if you are not in NY.

I believe the Tiffany warranty will cover this as well because it is authentic merchandise.

John, I stand corrected again in one of my comments above. I have been informed by a representative from Tiffany that they will no longer be using the GIA grading system but opted to rely solely on their own in-house grading system (unknown if any influence will be given from the AGS grading system). My only guess is that they have realized the softening of the GIA grading system and what affects it will have on diamonds. And besides, with their "higher" standards, the new GIA system would not due...which I have to agree with based on all of my readings. It would seem that the AGS and AGA appear to be the best cut grading system for a novice consumer as myself to follow as an excellent (or should I say ideal...hehe) guideline when selecting a diamond. Not to mention all of the wonderful professionals here at pricescope.com.

Wow, I can''t believe I''m getting into so much detail and research in trying to find the "right" diamond engagement ring for my girlfriend. I guess being a CPA is actually a bad thing after all (blah)...too much into the numbers and not enough time looking at the individual beauty of the diamonds.

Shawn, welcome to the insanity.

Seriously though, make sure you observe any diamond you consider in several lighting environments, not merely in conventional jewelry store spotlighting. Numbers-mania is addictive, but the most important thing is how the individual diamond looks to you (and to her). Welcome to PS!

Thanks John, pricescope.com is a wonderful web-site (very educational and informative)...but it''s too late for me now, I''m immersed too deep into the numbers insanity and I can''t get out...help!

All kidding aside, Tiffany found one other diamond for me to consider. However, based on these numbers stated below, I''m still partial for the one above. And on a side note, I can''t believe how patient the diamond professionals at Tiffany are with me. Anyway, here are the numbers for the new diamond if anyone would like to comment on and help me choose between the two...I''m running out of time and Paris is waiting...

Shape: Round, brilliant
Color: F
Clarity: VVS1
Weight: 1.27 carats
Measurements: 6.96 x 6.99 x 4.28mm
Total depth: 61.4%
Table: 56%
Crown angle: 34.6 degrees
Pavilion depth: 42.8%
Pavilion angle: 40.8 degrees
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick, faceted
Culet: None
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Precision of cut: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

Also, if anyone would like to comment on total depth of a diamond, why are diamonds cut to depths up to 62%. Wouldn''t a diamond "face up" better when the total depth percentage is between 60% to 61%. And does a deeper total depth beyond 61% just add unnecessary weight to a diamond....just curious.

I was hoping some "cut enthusiasts" would like to comment on the above two diamond engagement rings I''m considering. So many places to buy high quality and beautiful diamonds and so many to choose from...someone help with all the madness...hehe.

No one''s saying anything because there isn''t that much to say. Really hard to decide based on such limited information.

Anyway, Tiffany knows diamonds. The POINT of buying from Tiffany (or any brand) is consistency of product.

bwetween the 2 you posted I like the first one better.
out to around 62% depth is fine in a RB. some my favorite combos come out in the high 61% range.
You can compare these side by side and let your eyes decide :}
I dont think either one of them will be a dog.

Scooby............Rut Row (sorry, just had to do that

You''ve got the budget to get one heck of a nice ring. Buying from Tiffany or Harry Winston will surely provide a quality product.

It''s likely you can get more for less from one of the fine vendors on PS, but there''s nothing wrong with either seller you''re working with.

I would personally gravitate to the first stone you posted. I tend to like slightly larger tabled stones. I''m sure both are lovely stones though.

Good luck with your purchase and you have to post pictures. It''s a PS requirement.

Thanks everyone for replying...and Rob...that was funny...haha.

And to address the comment above, yes, I did inquire with whiteflash and goodoldgold about two to three months ago. I had a very "tight" cut range and specs for my diamond and they were able to get really close to it. I just wanted to see if I could actually find the specific specs I was looking for and Tiffany was able to find it as noted above (the D color diamond, well almost because I didn''t want fluorescence but "faint" is okay - just an "endearing" character quality of the diamond...hehe). It actually took them three months of searching..they were very patient and understanding with my quest for the "right" diamond engagement ring. Also note that the pavilion angle is actually 40.8 degrees and not 40.9 degrees on the D color diamond. My mistake.

Based on my extensive research learning about diamonds through the internet and elsewhere, I have found whiteflash, goodoldgold and niceice to have excellent tutorials (as well as pricescope and proposalring.com); a very trustworthy and honest place to purchase a diamond and to have some of the most beautiful diamonds available on the market. Although I will probably buy the Tiffany diamond engagement ring this weekend, I have directed some of my many clients (I''m a CPA with an extensive client base) to these websites because I know not everyone wants to buy their diamond from Tiffany (and not for the many Tiffany "bashing" reasons noted on this web-site). So I know for a fact they will be contacting these internet vendors for their diamonds. It was the least I could do for the knowledge I have gained from them.

As for me, my journey is coming to end soon and I''m kind of sad. It has been a lot of fun learning about diamonds. I believe the D color diamond above is a "mind" clean diamond and is visually very beautiful. So now, I wiill be off to Paris next month with my girlfriend (with my diamond engagement ring that I will present to her), staying at the Ritz and we will be opening the 1990 Dom champagne to celebrate after we dine at the Le Grand Vefour Restaurant (yummy)...I hope she says yes....hehe.

I will post a picture of the Tiffany diamond engagement ring here at pricescope after I purchase it.

Thanks again...I owe pricescope a great deal because it was here where the number madness all began!

Scooby,

I''m sure you''ll be really pleased with the Tiffany ring. I have a really good time every time I go in our local Tiffany''s and unlike other''s I''ve never been treated with disdain. In fact, just the opposite. The Tiffany people have always treated me quite nicely.

You commented you were sad your diamond buying experience is coming to an end. I actually found my experience grew once I purchased. Don''t think that you won''t be welcome here at PS once you''ve plunked down your $30,000 (WOW.......$30K!!). I have become a regular on PS and it''s become and obsession for me. Plus the people here are special people indeed and I learn much from them every day.

So, don''t be sad. Be happy you learned enough to insist on the kind of quality that will be a lasting statement of your life together. And feel free to stick around and help others like you were helped.

Best of luck to you and I hope your fiance is thrilled with the contents of her little "blue" box!

Scooby,
I can''t wait to see the ring. Mine came from Tiff''s too!! Please stick around. You will learn a lot and have fun at the same time!!!

Wow, thank you. I would love to stick around. This is a wonderful web-site and everyone is so great here! And no, I didn''t pay $30,000 for this Tiffany engagement ring. That was the budget I established for the engagement ring. The ring is in the high 20 range. Just know, it was never about the amount of money I was going to spend, it was all about the quality and cut of the diamond that mattered the most. That is why I''m so appreciative of this web-site and others like it...it has been a lot of fun and very educational.

And as I mentioned above, Tiffany is a wonderful place to buy a diamond but there are in fact other places as I mentioned above that will have just as beautiful and sometimes more beautiful diamonds. It''s all a matter of taste and what you''re looking for. I strongly erge all "new" diamond purchasers to really educate yourselves about cut quality (the most important of the four "C''s") before buying. And also seriously look at these reputable on-line diamond companies as a option...hhmm...it sounds like I work for them by promoting their companies...hehe.

I just purchased the Tiffany diamond engagement ring; the D color, 1.29 carat noted above. It has been a very long 3 month journey with many diamond stores (here locally and via the internet vendors) searching for what I perceive to be the "right" diamond. Although there are many incredible diamond retailers including a few here on pricecope, it was Tiffany that found the cut parameters and specs I was looking for. The journey and the countless hours of researching and many conversations with AGS appraisers learning about diamonds, ideal cut and what brings out a diamond''s inner beauty has been challenging but yet a lot of fun. For me, I refuse to look at diamonds as just a "commodity" but rather as a work of "art" to be admired for the rest of our lives. It has been worth all the time and effort I have spent because it has taken me a life time to find the most beautiful woman to share the rest of my life with...and she deserves what I perceive to be the best.

Again, thank you to everyone here at pricescope. It''s a wonderful place to obtain independent and honest opinions about diamonds (with only a few biased ones...hehe). Since it''s a requirement to post a picture of the diamond ring, I will try to do it soon.

Life is good but it''s going to be so much better when in Paris. A new journey begins.

Congrats!!! Can''t wait to see the pics!! Have fun in Paris. How romantic!!!

Shawn, congrats. It sounds like you did your homework and it will be romantic and special. I too get things from Tiffany''s, two upgrades in fact, and they have always been fine. To each his own, that is why there are so many great options for someone buying jewelry today. The best part is you have a consistency and a sense of comfort, not that you would not from other sources, but I do think Tiffany''s and Van Cleef''s and Harry Winston are great if that is the direction you wish to go! Good luck, I am sure she will say yes!

Well, it''s time to update all of you on our travels to Paris, France and the purpose of this surprise trip for my girlfriend. I proposed to my girlfriend...hhmm...now fiance at Monet''s Garden one early morning. I was able to find a quiet area overlooking the pond that inspired so many of Claude Monet''s great paintings. She was overwhelmed and loved the beautiful Tiffany diamond engagement ring I presented to her. I have attached a picture of the Tiffany ring. I''m sorry the picture quality is not very good. It looks so much more beautiful in person. We stayed at the Ritz Paris hotel. Perfect location. Very close to the Louve, etc... The variety of foods and wines were incredible not to mention all of the incredible and historic sites we visited!! We found Paris to be so very romantic!! It was an experience we will charish for the rest of our lives.

Now our journey together begins....

Congrats to the both of you!

wow, the ring looks just perfect on her. congrats on your engagement..

That 1.29 looks huge! What size is her finger?

Fantastic proposal Scooby. Gorgeous ring. And presented in the most romantic city on the planet. Congratulations, may your life together be magic!

What a beautiful ring and wonderful proposal story! Congratulations and thanks for coming back and posting a picture!!!

Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments above. We had such a wonderful and unforgettable time in Paris.

To respond to some of the above comments; I''m not sure of her ring size. We still need to have it sized at Tiffany. We''re doing it this weekend. However, I believe her finger size is just under size 4. I was worried the Tiffany ring was too big for her finger / hand. I didn''t want the ring to overpower her hand but to instead compliment it. I think the 1.29 carat does just that. Also, I would like to hang around this web-site and provide an independent view on other "new" visitors questions seeking help. I know how they feel. And besides, I spent countless hours learning about diamonds, where else can I rattle off all this information stuck in my head....haha.

Dare I say it - That is one ICEY WHITE diamond!

Very pretty -looks very nice on the hand.

Congrats to you & Best Wishes to your new Fiancee!

Very pretty and sparkles nicely. Congratulations.
