It is bad for my confidence though, just when I am about to embark on a rock-tour, visiting 6 Infinity-retailers and their customers

Not that I would know, nor would Paul want me to know - but i think he would be considered a handsome catch by many women

Well...you're partially right, Garry. He's quite handsome, as this picture shows (and the baby isn't bad looking, either). But a good "catch"? I don't think so. Most women would not think that a man who was attached to his wife and his baby would be the ideal catch! Now a roll in the hay...whoops. Forget I said that! Sorry, Paul. ;-)

I did a youtube search on diamond cutting out of curiosity and came up with a bunch of videos from india. They showed a production line not individual craftsmen with a personal touch, perhaps I had an over too romanticized afterall.

Is this the way cutting works everywhere?

No, although I think the assembly-line approach is more common, it''s not the way it works everywhere. Here''s an excerpt from Crafted by Infinity''s website re their cutting process:

"Every Infinity Diamond is mapped & planned by one man. One master sawyer and polisher apart from the co-founders is permitted to take a hand in the crafting. This is completely different than standard assembly-line productions turning out thousands of stones." link

I love Minneapolis (fun city!), but I''m in Wisconsin, so DS in Chicago is closest to me. Too bad I can''t make it out to the Boise event to see Wink, but I gotta work and earn a living so I can buy diamonds...maybe I''ll start a "Meet the Cutter" thread in Hangout to see if other PS''ers are going.

Sorry for the threadjack, Cehra!!

Not that I''m not enjoying watching Paul get evaluated, but "I guess" I''ll answer this question
2.gif

Yes most diamond cutting is conducted in assembly line fashion with one person cutting each section of the diamond - which is why so many of the diamonds that we see, both ideal and not ideal, are cut so wOnKy in terms of how the sections of the diamond "flow" together and this can result in some interesting transition problems, not only from section to section, but also from facet to facet... If you''ve ever walked through a house that was built by a bunch of sub-contractors with little oversight from the contractor, you''ve no doubt seen the effects of the next guy having to adjust his work to make up for the errors of the last guy (or so they say).

All right, back to Paul - but only because he''s an exception to the production line mentality of diamond cutting - Paul is quite different in the world of diamond cutting in that every diamond produced under his guidance is cut by one cutter from start to finish after the sawing and bruting process (shaping the outer girdle outline of the stone) and it makes a huge difference from what I see in terms of the overall flow of the stone structure...

Before or after you saw Paul''s picture? :P

Before.

I do not think I ever saw his picture until maybe two or three years ago. But he had me since "Numbers and perception, the case of square diamond-cuts," pub Jan 2005

I see that Infinity has a dealer in NYC but no plans to have an event here. Why not? Come on, Paul, my S I1 misses you!

Is it because the dealers are the ones arranging this? Maybe you need to give the NYC Infinity dealer a call and put a bug in his ear for next year.

Well, I bought my Infinities from Wink, so I don''t feel quite right bugging the NYC dealer. It''s not like he''ll be getting my business--if I win the lottery and buy more Infnities, or even just upgrade, I''ll be doing it through Wink.

The NYC Infinity dealer also carries Eight Stars. I would enjoy comparing them in person, but I don''t want to waste his time since I''m not really a customer.

I know what you mean. Wink (where I got my Infinity stones) asked me if I wanted to attend his event in Boise. When I said, hey, I live in the middle of nowhere (= middle of the country) and I can''t get away from work to make the trip, Wink said, could you get to Chicago? I said sure, it''s just a few hours'' drive away from me. So he and John Pollard contacted John Pollard about me attending the Dimend Scassi event in Chicago. And, Dimend Scassi is happy to have me, even though I''m a known Wink-ite.

Talk about customer service.

I don''t know what the deal is with the NYC dealer, but it''s worth an e-mail to John Pollard to find out.

I''m just excited to see the Infinity Princess Cuts in person (my husband is decidedly not excited for me to see any more Infinity stones in person, but that''s another story).

I think Dimend Scassi also carries Eight Stars, and I''m curious about those, too.

Sara - Be sure to have Paul tell you his story of the AGS wonks and the Infinity Princess Cut. You will love it.

You are absolutely correct, Cehrabehra! glitterata is the personification of an educated diamond consumer from the Internet. There will be store associates who will be shocked at her diamond knowledge and she is living proof that the Internet marketing model works. John and Paul will be so pleased to meet you. Please reconsider, glitterata.

Oh, if John and Paul were coming to the NYC dealer, I would definitely go meet them! But they don't have NYC on their tour schedule. Plus, I get the impression from the NYC dealer's website that they're an office, not a storefront, so I'm not going to be doing them any good raving about Infinities in front of customers if I have to make an appointment and am the only person there.

Hm...last time I looked at their website there was a long description of the Infinity and 8* brands and why they'd chosen to represent them. Now I can't find it. I wonder whether the website is in flux.

LOL! Your poor husband is going to be wishing he had gone with you instead of just turning you loose with a friend!

I am not at all surprised at Dimend Scassi. Infinity dealers treat each other like Family, because that is what is best for the consumer. If you look at your top retailers in all fields of business, it is usually the ones that do things to the betterment of the consumer that earn the repeat business from their clients.

Paul and John make sure that this attitude is part of the deal when they select their vendors.

Wink
