This is the first time I'm returning a stone to him. I know the address, but given the DHL situation, what is the best way to return it? UPS international? Should I insure it? He did not specify.

You need to email him Crasru. From the UK I have to send by normal mail and mark the package as "synthetic sample" or "glass". This isn't to avoid taxes but it's to avoid theft which is rife. In the UK we can insure a package for the full value but without declaring that on the envelope which is helpful (avoiding theft again). If you don't insure the package I'm guessing it would be at your risk rather than Tans. So I would most definitely speak with Tan because I don't know how he prefers returns from the US.

aww what are you returning?

I've returned a few stones between $300-700. He requests Registered Mail, and i think insured up to $100 (which freaks me out but thank goodness they've always made it there)

You need to email him & tell him you want to return it & why. He'll give you instructions (or one of his employees). Registered mail is what they told me when I returned something. They're so darned nice & honest, it's almost a pleasure to send something back! :confused:

I always send USPS express mail in a document sized padded envelope. I was told that is better security than registered mail because once it leaves the United States, it's isn't as safe anymore. If you send it express, the haste at which it needs to get there, is some security (that's what the postal worker told me). I returned three things to him express, and they got there a few days later. I also declare the items as documents for $100, and I pack a thin magazine in there around the gem. Express has a tracking number. It costs around $30 to return USPS express to Thailand from the U.S.

I was looking at a potential purchase. I thought I can pay upfront, tan send the stone, I view it and if it is not what I expect it to be, I can have it return for full refund?? He replied that they will charge a $100 RESTOCKING fee if I were to return. So I have decided not to view it. Does he charge restocking fee to you gals?

Not to my knowledge!! I've always gotten a full refund with the exception of S&H. Is this a new policy????? Is the stone you're considering very expensive?

It is a corundum $1k++..

TL, you're right, I sent the stone back by Express too. Took only a few days. Agnes, I haven't heard of Tan ever charging a restocking fee & I sure didn't pay one. Anybody else?

I’ve never sent anything back so I don’t know the process but this is the first time I’ve heard of a restocking fee!

I've only returned two things but I've never been charged a restock fee either. Thats nuts...100 bucks??
