Here's what I've been able to gather on the subject. You may pay a tiny bit more for a GIA stone because GIA seems to be the leader in certs. You can buy a GIA stone and feel pretty confident you get what the cert says you get.
That being said, you're not going to save a ton of money by buying an EGL certed stone JUST because it's an EGL. EGL can be a little be leniant in their grading, so paying less for an EGL may be because the EGL stone isn't as high quality as the GIA stone.
If you find an EGL stone you like, send it to an appraiser. I just sent on in to RocDoc who posts on these forums. I've been totally satisfied thus far.
