I just got the most wonderful ring from my fiancee. (Plat, Princess Cut/no side stones, GIA Papers etc). He bought it from Costco, and according to their website description it was able to be re-sized.

However, Costco does not offer re-sizing for their rings.

In the past, I''ve had the horrible experience of having my ring swapped while having it resized. So, I''m very cautious about getting resized.

To that end, I tried to find a reputable place where they did on-premise repairs. However, when I called they said they can''t resize it because it was a princess cut and they used "heat." Further, they stated that I should take it to a small store who can handle that sort of thing.

Here is my question:

1. Anyone have a recommendation where I can take it to get it resized on premise while I watch in the LA/OC area?
2. Why can''t a princess cut e-ring be resized because of heat?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A princess ring not being able to be resized because of heat? Never heard that one before!

But a lot of places do send platinum pieces out to be resized because the equipment to work with platinum is expensive for many jewelers to have one hand.

I never heard of that either. I''ve done a search online and can''t find anything about not being to resize a plat.e-ring because of heat.

I figured this would be the place to find out what this was all about and get recommendations where/suggestions on resizing.

Sorry, I can''t help you with the "where" part, but platinum rings can certainly be resized.

what kind of ring is that? can you give us a pic?

Definitely re-sizable. Got look at other jewelers?

Nanette,
My understanding is that California's environmental laws have created very strict rules related to working with platinum. My jeweler doesn't do any platinum work onsite and instead, works with a company in the downtown Los Angeles area that does. You may want to check around with some reputable jewelers as I'm sure you can get the ring re-sized; however, the jeweler may have to send out the ring for the work. I use Dave Schneider in Long Beach and they're very trustworthy (although the delivery companies are not as trustworthy - my first platinum setting was stolen during the delivery process and they had to start the process all over again -- from the mold to the pouring of the platinum - it took weeks).

Good luck!
