Hey, today I go in to look at the two Aschers the local jeweler got in "on memo", whatever that means. However, I have come to realize over the last 2 days that what I thought I liked about Ashers was not the stone itself alone (I still think they are awesome), but the "setting" (mounting???) I saw the stone in originally. For some reason I couldn''t separate the two, and when I saw the Rattini halo setting (seriously, can believe the terminology bombs i''m droppin'' ... try to keep up) I loved it. The point is I''m actually more in love with halo settings than ascher stones, i think.

Good student that i am, I looked on this board for such settings. I found this thread: WF Halo Prong vs James Allen Danhov Halo. (i can''t get it to stop writing in this font ... dammit!!). anywho, holy crap do i think the "Danhov" setting is cool.

Can anyone point me to this setting or very similar ones? someone directed me to some closeouts on a site, but there were no prices.

last question, i told the guy on the phone who i go see tonight that i liked "halo" settings, and he didn''t know what they were. is that a sign that i''m going to a shitty place?

"Halo" is kind of slang around here ... not many local jewelers have probably heard the term. Wouldn''t judge your jeweler by that alone!

He may have the type of settings in stock even and just have a different name for them. Look around at their stock settings while you''re there just to educate yourself & check out the quality (Do the mini (pave) stones all look bright & evenly set into the metal etc)

One piece of bad news ... many "halo" type settings cost as much for the setting itself as your budget for the entire ring. However you may have luck with some preset rings. Antiqueengagementrings.com used to have some preset halos with antique stones (which would meet your "unusual" desire).

i feel like my original budget is a pipe dream. it''s more important that i get what i want than it is that i can afford it.

What''s your budget. And what do you want for that (general shape of diamond, size and type of metal for setting).

Actually Danny, it''s more important to get what you can afford, not what you want at any cost. You will find that most of us here will never encourage or applaud someone to go over their budget. And by budget, I mean, what can you afford to pay cash for at the time of the purchase? Using a credit card is fine (say, if you have a c/c with mileage, etc. and you want to bank those perks on a large purchase such as an ering), so long as you have the cash to pay it off in full that month, IMO. So please, determine what you really can afford right now, and stay within your budget. You''re lucky that your GF is "tiny" as you said in another post, so you dont have to get her a huge ct. rock to have a presence on the hand. If you feel that you cannot currently afford the type or size of ring you''d like to get her, then please make sure you purchase your ring from someone who has a lifetime upgrade policy - like GOG - where you can trade up one day (assuming your GF feels the same about trading up, many women would never trade in their original erings so it''s not a given...). Good luck.

Danny, I also would never encourage anyone to overextend themselves because we really try to stay totally debt-free. However, when we were 21 and getting engaged, my husband was still in college and borrowed the money from his Dad, knowing that he could afford the payments to pay him back within a year as soon as he graduated and got a job. So if you can make a reasonable plan to pay back the extra amount you need in a reasonable amount of time, I think that would be fine. People get loans for new cars all the time when they could manage with an older used car and pay cash or get a smaller loan. The e-ring hopefully will last a lifetime, so I understand your desire to get it right!
