Hello Everyone, I’m new to this forum but have been reading many useful information here for the past few months. Thank you for sharing your advice and information. I found this forum to be very informative and everyone seem very helplful. I love everything diamonds and love seeing your precious pieces!

I have a ~2.4 ct oval diamond ring for 20 years and it now needs to be resized larger. So then I‘m thinking may be I should get it reset instead. When I got this ring my DH and I purchased the loose stone from our jeweller and chose one of his existing platinum settings. He had to rework the setting as I wanted the center stone set lower. The side diamonds are round and only 0.50 tcw. The shape of the channel surrounding the side stones is somewhat oval-shaped which I find nicely complements my center stone. I didn’t want anything too brilliant like a pave setting as to not distract from the center stone. I wear this ring most days without a band.

The oval diamond’s dimensions are 10.42 x 7.44. I’m attaching my ring‘s pic below.

Here are options I’m considering:
1. Set with 4-5 small round diamonds on each side, probably 0.25 pts each?, in invisible/shared prong setting. The current width of the channel setting closest to the center stone is approx. 4mm. Not sure if the side diamonds should all be the same size or start with a bigger one closest to the center stone and decreasing as they move farther away (this is how mine is now but in a channel setting). I’m attaching an image I found of a moissy oval ring on Amazon with an eternity setting to show the idea. Mine won’t go all the way around the band.
2. Set with 2 heart shaped diamonds on the side similar to the Graff style. Not sure what size heart to get, 0.30 or 0.35 ct or larger each based on the length of my oval? I don’t want the heart-shaped stones too large or too small, most likely 4-5 mm at its widest not sure how many pts that translate to. Depending on the size of the heart shaped stones, I may add either a small round or baguette diamond at the end as I don’t like the metal of the band to show.

I’d greatly appreciate any advice and suggestions you may have. Please feel free to share your ring pic or pic of setting style you think may work.

I love ovals as three stones best! Pears, half moons, traps! Good luck with your decision, the side stones in your examples IMO would distract from your center.

4-5 stones of .25ct each would be pretty big and uncomfortable. I feel like 2 side stones would compliment the setting more. You could have side stones.. but maybe smaller? Like 0.1ct each?

Thanks for your input, @Fancygems! Re: the small side stones, I wouldn’t have even thought of that. Thanks for pointing it out. No wonder every time I tried pairing my ring with a diamond band in store, the band would look super shiny and didn’t go with my ring. I thought may be it was the size of the diamonds in the band and had tried anything from 1 to 3 mm and just found they really outshone the oval stone. Now I know why.

Thanks for your suggestions, @maryjane04! I only thought of .25 ct because I figured it‘s the same width as my current channel band which is about 4mm at the point adjacent to the oval. I wouldn’t want to overwhelm the center stone in anyway. And @Fancygems made a good point the side stone setting may distract from the oval stone.

This is so much harder when there’s no preset setting to try. My concern about doing 2 side stones is getting the wrong size (too big/too small).

What size fingers are you? I am a 7.5 (but have since gained covid weight so probably closer to an 8 ).

I just got my new wedding band.. it's ~0.25ct each and I only have 7 and it's getting stuck on the sides of my fingers. I can't imagine 10 x 0.25ct + your oval centre stone as well.

I think for comfort more than anything probably get smaller side stones as you don't want to overwhelm your gorgeous oval.

Your ERing and wedding band are gorgeous! The setting of your ering is so elegant.

If I continue to wear my ring on my left hand, I was planning to resize it to 6 1/2. This size fits while leaving a bit of room for when my finger swell up in the heat without being too loose. If I get a size 7, I can wear it on my right hand as well but may be too loose if worn on the left in the winter. I currently have a band with 7 x 0.20 ct (or could be .15 ct) princess cut diamonds with I believe it’s called a U-bar setting. It’s smooth all over so it doesn’t bother me. I only wear it on its own though. However, I can see your point about the 10 x .25 ct stones. I‘ve been trying different eternity bands and couldn’t get used to the scratchy feeling on the side. I think the .25 all the way down the sides wouldn’t be comfortable for my stocky fingers.

Yeah definitely! I was supposed to wear the band on my right hand but it doesn't fit lol.

Not comfortable touching the sides of my fingers although maybe I could get used to it? I got it set very low too.

Princess cuts face up smaller than rounds so you'd have more width with the round stones. I guess it depends on the setting too? Lol maybe get some paper cut outs of the diamonds and sizes that you want to see how it would look on your finger?

I think .25 size stones are too big also. If you want the shank to be wider near the stone may I suggest a split shank? I think
split shanks look great with ovals. I like the ones that are one band then gracefully split and curve up to the stone.
Like this ring but yours would have pave. The unsplit portion of the shank would be wider.

Otherwise, I like the 3 stone. Let whoever is creating your ring suggest the stone size. You might look into Maytal Hannah. She does
a lot of ovals.

You’ll get used to your new band in no time. At least every time you feel it, you’ll look down and see this beautiful ring. =)2

For me, I think the claw setting on the eternity band is what was bothering me. And since I don’t have gaps between my fingers, I probably need to make sure the side diamonds don’t go too far down the shank if I go that route. May be a bezel set? Come to think of it my current setting looks somewhat bezel-like (I’m terrible at remembering names). I like your suggestion of smaller side stones although I’m leaning away from this option.

My vote goes to the 3 stone setting anyway hehe. You could play up your oval in so many ways. Half moons are really nice ;)

Thank you for your suggestion and links, @tyty333. That’s a beautiful oval ring on slip shanks. :kiss2: I got my oval ring many years before oval becomes popular and it’s so nice to see many examples out there. My DH likes the current setting and has been trying to discourage me from changing. I’m still exploring though. Don’t want to resize now only to get it reset in the near future.

Maytal’s gallery looks amazing! I’d love to be able to work with one of these amazing jewellers. I’m in Canada though and I went down the US all the time pre-pandemic days but our border is currently closed. My favourite jeweller closed his shop completely probably partly due to the Covid lock down. I’m on a search for a new reputable jeweller in Toronto area, if anyone has a recommendation.

I’m going to google half moons with oval. @Fancygems also mentioned it. I was looking at pics of 3 stone ring with side ovals but didn’t love the look. Half moons may work then I don’t have to worry about the round stones outshining the oval.
