I have an Art Deco antique engagement ring. I love the setting, but I''ve been thinking about resetting it as a solitare. I''m wondering what the chances are that I would completely destroy the setting if I were to have it taken out of it''s original setting. There is a chance I might not like the diamond (3ct) as a solitare, and would want it put back in the original setting.

Does anyone know the process of removing a diamond from a setting, and how risky it is?

Thanks!

You are best off taking the ring to several reputable jewelers to get an opinion. There are some experts here that can give advice, but most likely would need to see a photo of the ring.

I agree with jet - take it to a professional who is accustomed to working on antique settings for evaluation. Choose your jeweler carefully! We have salvaged many, many, many vintage and antique settings - odds are that the prongs may need to be rebuilt, but unless the setting is already damaged and worn, unmounting and re-mounting the same stone is usually possible with just a little prong work. But it really depends on your specific ring.

PS - pics, pics, pics! I gotta see this 3ct antique ring!!!
