Reset - which setting?

This is kind of just a brain dump, so it's long and rambly.

I've been pondering resetting my original diamond once I get my upgrade.

My original engagement ring is a .55 carat square radiant (actually X-Factor Princess from Whiteflash, but almost nobody will know what that is since they discontinued that line of stones years ago), and I have it in a simple 18k white gold 4-prong solitaire. I really love a solitaire, since I love stacking bands to jazz things up, but my upgrade ring will also be in a simple 4-prong solitaire until I can reset it (maybe forever--I do love a solitaire), so I'm thinking two solitaires is kind much, and I'd probably not wear two at the same time. Unfortunately, I hate necklaces and hardly ever wear them, so a pendant is not a good option. I've been told my stone is likely too large for a bracelet, as well, but I do love this one:

https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond-bracelets/cushion-bezel-bracelet-18k-yellow-gold-5491y18

So I've thought about doing a ring that I could wear as either a RHR or an alternative to my upgrade (which will be a larger OEC). I like the idea of having options, though I do wonder if I'd default to the larger stone. I'd likely wait to reset until I have the larger diamond. I currently wear an antique 5-stone as my RHR.

There are a few factors:

1) Nobody can tell that my stone has clipped corners in its current setting. The corners are well protected by the prongs, but the shape of the stone always get mistaken for a princess. It's not a big deal, but as a PSer, it bugs me. I try not to "actually" people about it and just let it go, but it's "a thing" for me.

2) I've also always loved (well, at least since I shopped for engagement rings 10 years ago!) a halo with a plain shank. My husband (then boyfriend) wasn't a fan of halos at the time we were looking at rings, and we were on a very strict budget, but has now changed his mind and said I can reset into whatever I want.

So I've pondered getting a halo that emphasizes the stones' shape. But then there's the factor of price. The diamond itself isn't large or expensive, so I feel a little odd about spending more than double the value of the diamond on the setting alone. But I want this to be an heirloom type piece, not something cheap from eBay. I'd love to have something by CvB or a high end maker like Danhov or Tacori, but we're talking $2,000-3,000 for a setting. I am sure I would love and wear it, but might feel guilty about the money. :|

Three settings I keep coming back to:

https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...ment-ring-style-cl102-as-by-danhov-item-58079 (love the petal basket on this)

https://www.whiteflash.com/engageme...tela-crown-solitaire-engagement-ring-4252.htm (love how this melds modern and antique--I have loved this setting for years)

https://www.etsy.com/listing/480891232/cvb-annie-style-bezel-set-halo-ring?ref=shop_home_active_2 (maybe minus side stones, and obviously scaled down for my baby of a stone at 5mm)

All of these have very different elements while still being halos with no diamonds on the shank, and I think all of them could work with my stackers. What would you do?

I don't think that stone is too big at all for a bracelet. I'd put it in a hinged bangle and bezel set it so the clipped corners are really obvious.

I second @tyty333 suggestion for a bezel setting! I love bezels and they really accentuate the shape of the stone.

I also love your bracelet idea, if you don't think that you will be wearing your first e-ring as much after the upgrade.

If you do want a halo with a plain shank, I bet that DK or IDJ can produce a similar setting to JAs one but on a much friendlier budget.

It's shape is very similar to my ER in the avatar. The octogonal halo brought my stone to life, yours would like great with a halo or just a thicker bezel, whatever you want to do.

If I did a bezel I would want one with a bit more definition on the outer edges, not quite so rounded, but that’s just me.

I would want a bezel halo for a RHR. I love bezels for their clean lines, and it would show off the shape of your diamond nicely. I'd do a halo because if it's to be a RHR I'd want to keep it from looking like my engagement ring. I recently asked IDJ to design a bezel halo for a heart-shaped diamond and they gave me a really competitive quote (I ended up selling the diamond).

.

Vote for bezel.

How about colored sides ?

Someone posted a gorgeous bangle with a bezel set diamond (hers was a marquise) but it's a thought if you don't want another ring.

Another vote for bezel in whatever you decide to do.

Another vote for bezel as well. Love that look with the milgrain on the edges as well. Good luck with your decision!

I really love bezels (I have the Danielle band in my avatar from Whiteflash, and my studs are bezels, too)! I agree that would definitely help bring out the shape more.

For the bangle idea, how comfortable are those? If it would be something easy for me to put on myself, I think I could wear a bangle that fits close to my wrist. I wear a FitBit Alta constantly on my left so I could probably get used to wearing a bracelet, as well. Necklaces just drive me crazy unless they are very long and don't make me feel like I'm choking.

For a bezel ring, I guess I was thinking that it wouldn't add much in terms of finger coverage, but maybe that would be okay. I have looked at more budget options, but then I think, why not just spend another $500 and get what I *really* want? Vs. spending $1,000 and getting something that is pretty but not exciting to me.

This is a really weird problem and I am thankful for PS folks who understand!

A bezel and a halo . Of the three options, the "Annie" just sings! It would really compliment your center stone, and I love the architectural elements. Based on what you said in your original post , I wonder if you'd eventually tire of the Tacori, and I like the crisper angles of something like the Annie compared to the JA.

I have a bangle with nearly 1.5ct bezel set cushion diamond (antiques cushion) and this baby is one of the most comfortable pieces of jewelry I ever had. I wear it 24-7 and even can sleep in it if I happen to forget to put it off.
Besides having a diamond in a bangle has an additional bonus that it does not get greasy as quickly as in the rings.

Good luck with your decision. It's a tough one.

I would vote bezel here as well but if you are thinking of something with a halo @Asscherhalo_lover's halo avatar is a nice sort of middle ground imo.

Though I have to say if you go bangle i don't think tha your stone would be too large for the setting you chose, maybe want a little thicker chain for security....maybe a rope chain something David yurman-esq...

Ohhh, @Dizzie, that is gorgeous! I could see a bracelet being a good option for me, since I was able to condition myself to wearing my FitBit constantly, though I used to take off my watch every night. I can't get over that choking feeling with necklaces--I've tried so many times! My sister has the same issue, and we commiserate since there are so many pretty statement necklaces these days, or even just simple pendants, but I can only handle them for a few hours for an event and then I have to get them off. Do you mind sharing the price range for just the setting? I would probably do white metal for the bracelet itself, maybe either yellow or rose gold for the bezel portion, since I do a lot of mixed metals these days.

A bezel seems to be the consensus, so the Tacori itself it out, as is the Danhov, but a version of either of those settings with a bezel for the stone itself vs. prongs does seem like a good option, too. And I could have someone make a version for much less--but part of me wonders if having a designer piece would be fun and special for this stone, since I'm such a pre-loved "get a deal" kind of person.

CvB also makes a version of that setting with just a bezel and side stones, but I could easily lose the side stones and go with engraving instead (I have an engraved orange blossom band from Belais that I love, very similar to Caysie's Sophia band engraving, but with no diamonds. Sophia for reference: https://www.etsy.com/listing/236019607/the-cvb-id-sophia-french-cut-diamond-and

This setting would definitely let my center stone be the star but with more finger coverage, though not "hiding" the size of the original stone: https://www.etsy.com/listing/498104157/cvb-ann-style-brush-metal-halo-ring

Another engraved halo with bezel option: https://www.etsy.com/listing/549260940/cvb-spring-gulch-rose-cut-diamond-carved

Engraved band in the middle, stacked with yellow gold stackers and my 5-stone.
