I posted earlier about Brian Gavin Blue diamonds. I have since put one on hold. It is a VS2 and I have been told it is eye clean.

It is reserved so I'll post the link

Looks good to me but I'd love some feedback. I want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything.

It will be going in this setting. I'm having it modified slightly to eliminate the little bump where the head meets the band.

It won't be the biggest diamond but as long as it is beautiful that is all that matters.

I would use some of the money you are spending on the setting to get a larger stone... Just my opinion... But the stone you picked out looks great.

Agree. For myself, I would have a hard time jutifying spending a "large" percentage of budget on the setting. The reason is that when I want to upgrade, the diamond would most likely retain its value, but the setting would reduce to scrap metal cost unless I can reuse it (much less likely case).

Good points, though realistically downgrading to a simple platinum solitaire and adding $1000 to the stone will only increase the size by .1 mm in this case (looking at inventory). It's a gorgeous setting, so my question is - are you sure she'll love it and will it be her final setting? If so, and she'll love the little added diamonds - it's worth it. If you're not sure, going with a white gold solitaire and saving money there may make more sense. It's up to you and her.

For me - my ring and diamond ratio were similar - $2700 for the stone, $1600 for the setting - but the setting really makes it for me and throwing another $600 at the stone wouldn't have made it materially bigger. It's all personal preference. :)

It looks beautiful! I think it'll be a stunning ring.

I'm glad nobody seems to think there is anything negative about the diamond. That is a good sign.

I appreciate the feedback on the setting. I did think about that. Even if I did move $1000 from the setting to the diamond I'm not going to move up much in size.

If I stayed with the Blue diamonds I'd be able to move from .817 I VS2 to .855 G Vs1 just based on current inventory.

If I went with no fluorescence I could go up to a .838 H VS2 or a .868 H Si1.

So I could get a little better color and a slightly bigger diamond that I don't even know would be noticeable.

I just don't think it is worth going with a plain setting to only go up in size that much. Sure if $1000 more for the diamond meant getting a full 1.0 carat then I'd probably do it.

She is very sentimental. She would never give up her first ring to trade it in. Whatever setting I get will be her final setting. Not because I wouldn't upgrade if she wanted down the road but because I know how attached she will be and it won't be an option. So I want the setting to be beautiful but still simple. I've been stuck on this setting for months.

I'm planning on ordering today. Unfortunately I do not know her ring size and she doesn't have any rings to even try to take in and have sized. I know a lot of people buy these together now but she would rather it all be a surprise so I have to figure out how to get her size. I'll probably call up one of our friends in a little while and recruit her to help. Hopefully we can think of something.

Re: Ring size

You can request a free ring sizer from Blue Nile (should arrive within a week). Then ask her friend to get her to figure out her ring size... maybe if the friend had it laying around her place when your gf shows up and explain that she was planning on getting a right hand ring or a ring for her mom or something then she can jokingly ask your gf to try it on and figure out her ring size. Just a thought, ha.

That's a pretty good idea. I wonder if anyone locally has them. Maybe Brian Gavin can send one sooner. The ring is going to take about 3 weeks to make and I'd like to have it for a trip we are taking which is cutting it close. I wish I had done all this about 2 weeks ago.

Does she have a friend you can ask to take her shopping this weekend? Maybe one of their stops (in a mall?) can be a jewelry store, where they try on rings for fun, and her friend can report back.

That's what I planned on doing today. I'm going to call her in a little while. It would be a very out of the ordinary thing to do. Although this friend is hoping to get an anniversary band soon so maybe she can somehow make it seem like that is what they are out looking for. Hopefully she is available.

That's perfect!

As for the diamond and ring you chose, I think they're a great combo. You and webdiva are right about not gaining any noticeable size with the cash from going with a cheaper setting. The ring will be beautiful.
