Hi Everyone,

First I''d like to thank you for having this website and forums available for newbies like me. I''ve been shopping around for an engagement ring for the past 3-4 months and was very happy to find such a useful source of information and education. I originally stopped at a Tiffany''s to learn something about diamonds, but they really only talk about the 4 C''s. I was also quite shocked at their markup and am not really into the brand name that much. The upside was that the salesman was very helpful and respectful even though I told him I was not ready to buy.

The only other trip I''ve taken to a diamond shop was in a jewelry district. They didn''t have much of a selection and I was only able to look at the diamond through a 10X loupe. The price was too good to be true, so I passed it up in hopes of finding something better and more trustworthy online. I''ve felt lucky to be exposed to other sites through Pricescope that isn''t mainstream. Still, I''ve been leaning towards Blue Nile because I''ve purchased a diamond necklace and diamond earrings through them and have had a good experience. In addition, they have the setting that I''ve had my eye on. I haven''t been able to find the same one elsewhere. I have finally selected a general criteria of what I''m looking for, but am still open to other options.

What I am looking for is an opinion on this diamond and setting I''ve had my eye on during the past few days. I''m in no hurry to buy, but it would be useful for me in terms of education to see if I''m able to select a decent diamond on my own. I would appreciate any feedback or advice you could give me.

The following links should provide you with the information that I usually see asked for, including the GIA report.

Thank you!

Welcome.

The diamond seems to have what we call a nice make, but it isn't cut to superideal proportions, which we see a lot of here. These superideals are cut to very exacting proportions to have the best in optical performance. The diamond you posted may look very nice, but you could do better I expect. Some suggested proportions are;

depth - 60 - 62%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34 - 35 deg
pavillion angle - 40.5 to 40.9/ 41 ( if crown angle complements)

These are examples only, others may prefer a different set of proportions, but they should put you on the right track. You can also use the Holloway Cut Advisor which is under tools at the top, to check your selections. Also it is good to have access to an Idealscope image to confirm what the numbers say, but to the best of my knowledge, BN don't provide this service at this time.

Also an F IF is extremely high for colour and clarity, if the cut is good you could drop those and still have a very white and clean diamond, although this is a preference and some prefer high on both for purity reasons.

Thank you for quick reply. I was actually questioning whether the IF was worth it or not. I think I would like to stick to the D - F color range though. After searching again and using the cut advisor, I think this may be a better diamond.

That is absolutely fine wanting to stick with the D - F colour range if that is what you prefer!

I think IF is not worth it, unless you have some very strong (perhaps religious) reason to want an absolutely flawless diamond. If you just want a visually flawless diamond (where the flaws cannot be perceived by the unaided eye), you can definitely go lower in clarity and get a bigger stone. You should be safe in the VS1-VS2 realm.

IF is really more of a state of mind than a state of clarity. It means only "no visible inclusions when viewed at 10x magnification." There may well be (and almost certainly are) inclusions that are visible at higher magnification. To be honest, most stones in the VVS range are visually indistinguishable from IF, even under magnification, unless you have professional training. There''s no reason to go for IF unless you want to pay extra for the perceived exclusivity.

As others are noting, even with the second diamond you chose, you are paying a substantial premium for a VVS2 and IF. If you drop to a VS2 you'll save a lot of money or get a much bigger diamond. And dropping to an SI1 that is eye clean will save you much more money or allow you to get a much bigger diamond, without seeing any visual difference at all. But, this is a personal choice which you need to be comfortable with.

For example, sticking with your $9250 price ranget, an F, Ideal cut proportions (GIA), you can get a 1.22 for $8985.

Or, you can save a tonne or money, stick with 1 carat and pay $5450 for an AGSO 1.03, F, SI1:

I'm not suggesting either option, as I haven't pumped the numbers in to HCA or Dave Atlas' cut advisor, plus I am not a huge fan of the proportions of the 1.22 carat. But, this gives you an idea of what you can achieve if you drop in to the VS or SI ranges, which, again, is a very personal choice.
