Hello Everyone,

I just signed in and am totally new at this! I was hoping someone out there can give me advice on the following. After dating 8 years since the breakup of my first engagement (she broke that off by the way), I finally found someone that I want to spend the rest of my life with. So, I went to look at some diamonds with the hopes of a "trade in" value of my old diamond.

The diamond I saw has the following:

Cut: round
Color: E
Carat: 1.35
Clarity: SI1
Cost: $9,062

The diamond I had for trade in from my previous engagement has the following:

Cut: round
Color: I
Carat: 1.00
Clarity: SI1
Cost: Approx $4,700 in 1996 dollars (don''t really recall the amount)

1. Is the first diamond of $9,062 worth it for those C''s?
2. I had no paperwork with my old engagement ring so the trade in value for the 2nd diamond that the jewler would give me was only $2,000. Are they ripping me off? If so, is there any other place I can sell this diamond for more $?

Apologize for such a long email. If anyone out there can help me I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger; You are in a good place to discover the answers you need. And, you need many things before you really have sufficient information.

1. Take each of the diamonds, the one you hope to buy and the one you have. Make pricescope searches for stones of these supposed qualitites. You will discover the relative retail of each one on the Internet, provided you have been given the correct gradings for weight, color and clarity.

2. Realize you are missing some very important information on cut quality. You need to learn about this if you want a great diamond. There are some fantastic sites for learning about this linked out from pricesope, so take advantage.

3. The liquidation value of your old diamond is a lot better than the value of the lost relationship which is a total loss. Figure the diamond will bring back only a fraction of retail from a cash buyer, wholesaler. If you want to sell a diamond at retail, to a consumer, then the pricescope search will give you a fair idea of the most you can hope for as a private individual seller. You are likely to obtain quite a bit less, but that is up to you and how good a salesman you are.

Hi Yeer and welcome!

Stick around PS. The tutorial here and on the vendors' sites (such as GOG) will go a long way in helping you before you make another diamond purchase. Regarding the old diamond, since you no longer have paperwork on it, you should seriously consider having it independently appraised before you try to sell it or trade it. That way you will know exactly what you have as far as cut quality.

Sorry the first engagement did not work out. If you cannot get the amount of $$ you want for the old stone, could you hold onto it and have it made into a necklace at some point for your future wife? I know you probably just want to dispose of the memory, but it would be sad to see you lose a lot of money on it. It's just a thought . . .

Thanks for all the suggestions. I feel so dumb when it comes to these terms for diamonds. I went to the old diamond jeweler today and obtained further information on my old diamond ring:

1 carat
SI1
I color
Dimensions: 6.28 x 6.34 x 3.86
Total Depth: 61.2%
Table 62.8%
Crown height: 11.8%
Crown Angle: 32.5
Pavilion Depth: 42.2%
Pavilion Angle 40.4
AGA Cutting/Proportions Grade: 2B, ranging from 2A to 2B

Is this a good ring? I bought it for about $4,700 back in 1996 and I have been recently quoted only $2,000 for a possible trade in value. I am being ripped off aren't I?

Any quick ideas for me? Thank you...

I think your numbers are off.

I plugged those numbers into the cutadviser and I got this message

"blah blah... the girdle is overly thick or you entered the wrong data"

In any case, you can do a lot of research about value on this site/forum. I would suggest spending an hour reading through the tutorial first.
