Long Time Lurker; First Time Poster!

I've been reading up on this site for a few weeks now, absorbing the wealth of information provided by all you experts, in an attempt to make an informed decision for the rock with which I hope to propose soon! I had NOOO idea there would be so much to know, my education continues....

My requirements were RB, GIA xxx, >1.3c.

After hours and hours of searching, I seem to like one particular gem that I'm hoping to get you fine folks' opinions on.

GIA xxx, 1.5c, I, VS1 with Strong Blue Fluorescence measuring at 7.46x7.48x4.41

It is also a higher than average table, hence the higher measurements.

Table: 61%
Depth: 59%
Crown: 32.5
Pavilion: 41.0
Medium-sl Thick.

HCA
Selected: 59% depth, 61% table, 32.5° crown angle, 41° pavilion angle
The result is for a symmetrical diamond with a medium girdle and very good polish
HCA scores were adjusted Dec. 15, 2001 and Feb. 6, 2003.

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Excellent
Scintillation Very Good
Spread
or diameter for weight Excellent
Total Visual Performance 1.7 - Excellent
within TIC range

My concerns are with the high table, "Very Good" light return rating, and the impact the Strong Blue fluorescence will have to the naked ye under normal circumstances (I have NOT seen the diamond, and will not be able to before my purchase)

I obviously want to get the best bang for the buck, but the most important thing is that the ring "sparkle" for my lady :)

Thoughts and comments appreciated! Attached are some pics.

Thanks

I honestly would not buy it because I really dislike large tables and small, flat crowns ( prefer tables of 54-58 and crown angles of 34-35). I would only buy Excellent on light return. But the idealscope looks okay. So it might be worth it to you to buy it if i fits your budget and a more ideal cut stone does not. I think fluorescence is a positive in an I color stone.

It may very well be excellent bang for your buck; how much does it cost?

SI1s are also a very good value.

Thanks guys.. My priority is size and sparkle, with a budget of 10k, and this comes in just at that amount.

Do you think with the low crown/high table that the "sparkle" will be compromised? Both Light and Scinti. rated only as "Very Good" on this stone.

Let me check some prices on some that are better cut to see if this one is your best bet.

Well, there are some GIA XXX I VS2's on B2C Jewels around $10k, but they don't have the GIA reports so I can't check the angles. The large table will mean it will be a bright white stone but not show as much fire. What I will say is that you can get a better GIA XXX, but for your budget, this stone is pretty nice. I prefer fluorescence in I color stones, so that is a plus.

Thanks diamondseeker!

I haven't quite figured out what the impact is of a low crown angle on the fire/brilliance of the stone. I've seen the diagrams where they show the light not being reflected due to the angles in a poorly cut stone, but I'm curious as to the impact of that on an ostensibly excellent stone graded XXX.

Part of me wants to pull the trigger so I can have the ring in time for my planned proposal, but outside of a car, this is my most expensive purchase yet, so obviously don't want to rush into the wrong thing.

This is not a problem.

I would not worry too much, the HCA is good, the IS is good. The price is good for a VS1, and with the strong blue it may look a little bit whiter. It should be very nice. It may look different from a typical Tolkowsky that we see here, but not necessarily less beautiful.

Thanks so much JulieN!

I went ahead with the purchase today... should have a ring by next week hopefully...

Couldn't have done it with out all the wonderful advice on this forum... I think I'm addicted now.. I spent about 3 hours after I purchased the rock perusing these threads and trying out my diamond sleuthing skills :)
