I posted this in SMTR, but should have posted here...

Eeeeeeek! I was just browsing around and saw several posts about it not being ok to wear white gold next to platinum! I just got that white gold sapphire and diamond band and was planning to wear it next to my platinum wband (which is full eternity w/3 pt diamonds). My ering is platinum as well. So is this sapp band not a good fit? Please tell me now so I can return it if I''ve made a boo boo!

Here is my post with all the rings together: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/hows-this-one.81422/

thanks all!

I have heard different things...some say yes it''s ok, others say no way! I have worn platinum and WG together and I have not seen any problems with wear...maybe I was just lucky, who knows!

(I posted on the other thread, but here''s what I said!):

My mother has worn a 5 stone white gold band next to her platinum wedding band for at least 20 years with no problem whatsoever. The problem comes in when settings are made so that they rub against the other (as in a part that sticks out). I''d think you''ll be fine as long as the diamonds can''t scratch the white gold ring.

I also have a platinum e-ring and eternity band (6 pointers) and just bought a sapphire eternity band and went with platinum so there were no issues with rubbing. That being said, when I get another ring to stack I think I will seriously consider white gold. I know that platinum is ideal, but it''s just so much cheaper to go with white gold and if you''re not going to be wearing them together every day, I don''t think it will cause much of a problem. I also have a friend who wears a platinum e-ring with a white gold wedding band (channel set) and has not had any issues at all. I freqently stack my platinum eternity band with my 18k gold rolling ring and it hasn''t eaten at the rolling ring at all. I think you should just leave it as is, especially since you probably won''t be wearing this ring every day.

You can wear any type of metal ring next to any other type of metal ring, but over time, probably a good amount of time, the platinum ring may wear down the side of a gold ring if placed next to it. Of more immediate concern might be the fact that platinum and white gold begin to look different from one another fairly quickly, platinum will pick up a kind of soft gray patina and most white gold jewelry will begin to oxidize and yellow with exposure to the chemicals released by our skin. Most white gold jewelry is plated with rhodium for this reason, the rhodium gives the jewelry a crisper, brighter white gold appearance and slows down the oxidation process. There are new white gold alloy mixtures on the market that are supposed to be less prone to oxidation, however these metals have not been available on the general market long enough to really see how they are going to age, so I can''t provide you with a comparison for how those will look next to a platinum ring over time. It''s safe to assume however that the platinum will patina as it always does and the white gold will age slightly different, so the decision whether to wear platinum next to white gold really comes down to your level of acceptance as to the slight difference in the appearance of the two metals.

The thing is, if the white gold band has mostly stones showing, the metal color won''t be that apparent. My mother''s diamond band in white gold mainly shows the diamonds. It''s really only on the underside of her hand that you can see the yellowing of the band. But I never noticed this until I asked her to take her rings off so I could clean them. I had no idea one was wg and the others were platinum! She has never had the wg band rhodium replated, but it needs to be done. It just wasn''t noticeable since what you really see are the diamonds.

Thanks everyone! So it sounds like the consensus is that it should be fine. I appreciate the responses!!
