replicating a setting?

hi everyone

i''m finally starting the engagement ring buying process

(do you still call it an engagement ring if you''re already married??) and am so glad that i found pricescope. i am learning so much but feel like i still have a lot to learn before i make a purchase. i''m hoping that some of the experts here can help me out

i''m doing things a bit differently and looking into settings first. i am in love with leon mege''s work, especially this ring: and i would love to get something that looks exactly like this but with a milgrain edge. i don''t think i will be able to afford this setting though, i expect that this setting will cost well over $2k which is my budget for the setting.

is it in bad form to send a picture of the leon mege setting i want to a jeweler like whiteflash and ask them to replicate it exactly with a milgrain edge? would that violate any copyright laws? if a jeweler would replicate the setting, do you think they could do it for under $2k?

They cant make an exact copy of the ring but would probably be able to suggest some changes to it so that
they could make it. I dont know if adding milgrain would be enough of a change. Actually that ring is somewhat
of a common look (cathedral setting with pave on the shank). So I seriously doubt Leon has a "patent" on it???


I dont really know how much it would be. I would think around $2k would be a good estimate but I''d only be
guessing. All I can really say is that you need to talk to some custom folks and see what they have to say.
I dont think there is anything wrong with showing them a picture of what you want but they may say that
it has to be changed slightly.

I would request a quote from Leon. You might be surprised. He now has a nifty ''Request Quote'' button on his website.

Also I am sure WF could make that setting with milgrain. It''s nothing unusual. Just ask for a pave cathedral with a basket head with milgrain. Voila! Send pics of the Leon ring and any others similar to it that you like.

i requested a quote from leon and got a response pretty quickly. their quote was $3500 which is more than i wanted to spend. his work is so beautiful though. i wonder if i will be disappointed in getting a replica of his setting rather than getting the real thing? i''m also going to contact whiteflash and get a quote from them.

Any ring can''t be an exact copy, you have to alter the design by 20% last I heard. It''s a fun way to make it your own, I have done so myself. WF, BGD, ERD would be the ones I would get quotes from. Best of luck!!!

What is it you like about Leon''s ring? The basket? The band? The side stones? Are you considering an asscher? His baskets are integrated into the band. So you need to know what features can be mimicked by another vendor and which cannot. And which do you even care about.

It never hurts to ask but rather than asking for a direct copy find several examples of things you like and see it someone can combine them. I am guessing Leon''s quote will easily be over $2k.

swingirl, i LOVE with your ring from leon mege and have been anonymously admiring it for some time

i am also planning on getting an asscher. what i really love about the leon mege setting is the basket and how the band is integrated with it. i also love how low the setting is. i want side stones in my setting but do have concerns about going with pave. i am quite rough on my hands and worry that i might lose some of the sidestones.

i was wondering if instead of pave sidestones, i could get channel set stones. do you think i would be able to replicate the things i love about the leon mege setting but with channel set sidestones?

Thank you for the compliment. I also like the way Leon''s baskets are integrated into the band. I am sure others out can do that but I suspect it may be close to Leon''s price. Leon''s specialty is his pave so he would not be the vendor to go to if you want channel set side stones.

i''ve spent most of the day going through the Eye Candy thread on SMTR (i''m on page 84 of 174 so far!) to find inspiration pics and found a few whiteflash custom pieces that look similar to the leon mege setting that i like so i''ve contacted them to see what they will charge. i hope i can find something within my budget!
