So my gf has settled on a fairly unique platinum cathedral setting that we saw in a B&M jewelry store, already set with a 1.01 ct diamond. When I went back and viewed the GIA cert. on the stone, I realized that I could get a "better" stone by purchasing a loose stone online. Because of some of the unique attributes of the setting (particularly the 9 mm height), however, I have not been able to find a comparable setting elsewhere.
The jeweler at the B&M store stated that they would be willing to set a loose diamond that I purchase elsewhere (for a small fee of $50-$100). Unfortunately, they told me that the manufacturer of setting we saw is no longer in business and they only have that one setting remaining in stock. They would be willing to remove the diamond from the setting and then set the diamond that I provide. The diamond that I provide would be roughly the same size, perhaps .1-.15 ct. larger. Is there any reason that you are aware of why it would not be advisable for me to have the existing stone removed and the ring re-set with a new diamond? The ring would also need to be re-sized up about a half size. I just wonder whether you all think it would be a bad thing to do that many alterations to a platinum ring that has already been set with a diamond?
